Then you have a wonderful opportunity. Just buy the stock of whichever oil companies you're sure are making obscene, greedy profits, and laugh all the way to the bank. Use some of your profits to buy gas and they'll be essentially paying you to drive.

That is a great idea. :D hedging your bet right.

My commute only tallies up 85 miles a week so I just need to control my recreational driving a bit and in a year or so I think I'm gonna buy a late '90s Civic EX as a DD and just drive the Runner when winter calls upon it and just for weekends.

I thought the European countries were already at $3.00 per liter
:dunno:
We do have alot of tax on our gas, including a tax on top of the taxes. It all goes into a big pot for health care, welfare, roads etc.

European gas prices are at about 1.25euros.. which is about $2CDN/L.

i live in winston salem, north carolina...our gas is flirting with $2.90 per gallon, and we just had yet another hike in our gas tax...i swear im going to south carolina, its gas as soon as you cross the border is around 25 cent less per gallon

This supply demand BS does not stand up. There is not a supply problem, just a greed problem by the producers and the refiners. The talk is that we will be competing with China for oil. Give me a break. The average Chinese makes 10 cents an hour compared to the American making say $10.00 per hour. What I am saying is that the average American is 100 times richer then their counter part in China. So if we pay $3.00 per gallon for gas it will have the effect in China of them paying $300.00 per gallon. Even if it was only $30.00 per gallon that is not going to happen, they will be forced to go to alternative energy resources. It's like any other item. If they only make 100, 10 carat diamonds that sell for $100,000 per diamond, I doubt I will be competing for the purchase of that diamond. Don't run out and buy a hybrid too soon.

You just won the award submitting the post with the most inaccurate information ever!!

Did you make that up yourself, or do you have someone feeding you BS?

I don't understand all the hoopla over gas prices. Sure, paying more always sucks, but is it really gonna break anyone's bank?

If you do the math, it's not really a big deal. I drive the national average of 12,000 miles per year. My 4Runner averages about 18 mpg. If gas prices go from $2.00/gal to $3.00/gal, my fuel bill for theh entire year will increase by about $600. No biggie.

Most of you guys spend more than that on mods in a month (myself included).

I soon will be doing more comute to and from work by bike as soon as School ends for my wife and child. ( wife's a teacher).

I do this every year during Summer break.

Then it will just be me and Trek and nature.:D

Not to come off as an ass, but this is something that one should have realized before buying a 19-21 mpg vehicle. If you can't afford the gas, you should not have purchased it to begin with.

Who's got a 19-21 mpg vehicle here? I sure don't. Mine gets about 14-15 mpg and your Lex sure isn't going to do any better. And not that I'm getting rid of mine but gas has gone up probably upwards of 80% since I bought. If you drive a lot of miles that could certainly put a dent in someone's budget. I don't think it is quite as simple as you make it to be.

I voted for number 3 since I already have a motorcycle and ride at least 2 days a week. As prices go up, so will my commuting days.

as gas price rise my 4r seem to be getting better MPG ever time I fill up! usually adv. around 17.5 to 17.7 mpg now I'm getting 18.9 to 19 mpg doing the same driving? Hummm maybe its the warmer weather or the gas co is giving use more mpg for our money? lol

It was easy for me! I was getting 21.6 mpg (actual) on my V6 4Runner. My GX gets 18.2 (actual). So, yes, it is simple for me. Need to be a responsible buyer and forsee these market swings. If a mere increase of $.50 makes or breaks you, you had no business buying in the first place. I drive about 250 miles per week from the burbs to the city for work. I fill up about every week. If my tank is 23 gal and we assume that I fill it up completely every time, that equates to $69 @ $3 per gallon. Both of these are overestimates because I still have about 1/4 of a tank of fuel left at the end of the week. No matter. @ $2 per gallon (you can kiss those days goodbye) that equates to $46 per fill up. That is a cost difference of $23/week or $92/month or $1196/year. I really don't think that if the increase in these numbers seems astronaumical to you, you prob couldn't afford the 4Runner in the first place. Think about it. Who can afford a $35000 truck if and extra $23/week makes or breaks you. It just seems logical to me that you shouldn't have bought the truck then. And remember...the $23 figure is a gross estimate and it is prob more like $15/week because my tank is not dry at the end of the week. What does $15 buy you anymore??? A dinner for two at Wendy's??? People make too big a deal about these gas increases. Yes, it sucks to see it climb as much as it has in the past year, but I can remember from about 90-2000, it stay around $1.20 average. That is a steal especially when Europe paid close to $5/ gallon in those days. Gas price increases are really not that big of a deal in the long run. And, if they are, you should get a corolla or something that saves you money on both the payment and the fill-up. JUST MHO!

OK. According to my computer, I get 19.3 mpg. I drive 50 miles to work so that's 100 per day just in commuting, not counting the additional driving that I do. I have to fill up every 3rd day. I use premium gas at $3.02/gal. I love my 4Runner and I have put 26,000 miles on it since I bought it brand new with 3 miles on it last August and I refuse to park it. It is just is what it is. That said, I see no reason to be nasty, hostile or snooty because some folks have concerns over rising gas prices. The situation is real and those of us who can just drive around no matter what don't have to be lecturing condescending jerks to those who find these times a bit challenging. What are the gains in doing that? It's just small-minded and it's getting really boring.

I'm sorry you found my reply to Toybox to be, "small-minded and boring." That was not my goal. I was just merely stating a fact about how little $15/week should affect your life. If it does, then you might want to re-evaluate your need to drive a 19.3 mpg car 100 miles/day. Obviously, you have budgeted enough money for this increase and you will be okay. I too have concerns over rising gas prices. I just talk myself off the way when I think about it a little more in-depth than a number on a sign. If it affects you that much then why dont' you buy a used camry that gets 30+ mpg and save the miles on your 4Runner? My case and point is that I don't understand why people are making a huge deal out of this. If it is such a huge deal, then why did you buy a car that gets 18mpg?

You are an absolute exception with those mpg figures and must drive all highway and barely make a stop between home and work.

You have to be kidding me. Who foresees or predicts 80% increases. (I bought mine 3 years ago) And who are you to say what people should do with their money?

$100 a month is a good amount of money, considering it is on top of what you are paying already and in addition to all the other increases to the budget from other things related to gas, like heating a house etc.

In all this I wasn't speaking of myself, I am keeping my truck. I CAN afford it and more if I WANT. It is more about what is important to someone.

Good for you. Alot of people don't make good decisions.

Because obviosly some people have different life circumstances than you and because when gas prices almost double it IS a big deal. It affects more than gas for your car.

It is not "people making a huge deal out of this." It's a polling post on an internet forum and people are discussing a thread.

Well I guess that you will have to adapt then...or trade in the 4Runner to better your circumstances.

I disagree; at least in reference to your posts. You personally attacked me and made it out to be more about me being snotty. You made it personal by attacking my comments instead of simply stating your case. Re-read your posts.

You know CV, initially when I posted a reply to this thread, I didn't even have your post in mind. Your post was not the only post on this thread that carried the tone that you seem to have. You took my post and made it all about you. I never named you or your responses to toybox whom you thought I was directing my statements towards. When I'm directing myself to someone, I name them. I was making a general blanket statement about the thread. Thus, your reply and smug comments directed towards me caught me off guard which leads me to wonder; perhaps the shoe does fit in your case? You certainly have been snotty on this thread, to use your word, whether you chose to realize it or not. Now back to the topic about rising gas prices.
