When to resurface rotors

How do you know when it is time to resurface you brake rotors?

My car has about 16,000 miles. I went to the stealership, they said I need to replace my front brake pads and resurface my front brake rotors. I know I need to replace brake pads, they are worn.
But I'm cumfused about the rotors. Seems to early to me.

What do you think?

How did you wear out your brakes after 16k miles? Something smells fishy.

I agree. Something doesn't seem right. I have 32K on my 4Runner and it's in the dealership every 5K for service and nothing has come up yet with mine.

Yea, I have just about 36k on my runner and have tons of brakes yet to go. Don't get screwed by someone.

wow..16K and you're changing your pads already? i'm at 46K and have just order new rotors and pads. from what I've learn, it's best if you change your disc as well as your pads. you can re-surface it if you like.

the front disc on an Sport Ed is bigger then the Limited and SR5.

They're bigger than the SR5 but I'm not sure they are bigger than the Limiteds.

You don't have to change the discs when you change the brake pads. Also if you change the discs, you don't have to have them surfaces because they are new. I have a set of discs on my Tacoma that have 100k on them and they are still fine.
