where did you mount your scangauge? (pics request)

Here's my scangauge mounted in my T4R Limited (idea of the mounting location stolen from another member). I'll be swapping out the Sony for a sweet Alpine 137bt A2DP streaming head unit later this weekend. :banana:

I'd imagine heat can possibly make the unit get too hot and cause internal problems. I doubt it would though. I'm the same way, even in Arkansas. In winter I rarely use the front vents for heat unless I absolutely need heat to hit my face or something. I usually just use the defrost vents.

Another Option for Mounting

There really doesn't seem to be a "perfect spot" to mount this thing but here's what I did. It may not be heavy-duty enough for wheeling (I'm not sure).
I just put it in to monitor trans temps as I've been doing some towing lately and want to know if I should get a trans cooler.
Also considering by-passing the radiator (to avoid the milkshake alltogether)but I'm still on the fence. I'm gong to replace the rad first and monitor temps, then probably by-pass with B&M and monitor temps. If the trans temps are too low in the winter- I'll change it to in-line.
That's the plan!
Anyway, here's my simple mount.
I used the little windshield mount from my escort radar detector (I use a visor clip for the radar).

That was my thought. Unless you wear Aviators, most Oakley's and similar glasses won't fit in the sunglass spot on our overhead console. I'm sure you could rig it up with a little ingenuity.

Quick update for others considering mounting options in 3rd gens. I wasn't happy with it mounted to the windshield
I re-used the escort radar windshield mount (without the suction cups). I velcro'd the mount to the dash and ran the cable behind the vent down to the plug (completely hidden- which is why I'm posting this)- lots of guys have mounted it in this position but with the cord hanging out! I found a thread by CO Flyfisher (3rd gen dash clock fix http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/67508-3rd-gen-dash-clock-fix.html) that showed how simple it is to remove the center console trim. I'd say this looks a lot better than having the cord running down on the outside!

I know, right? I used to average 180 degrees before I changed the old thermostat with a brand new genuine toyota one (same Yota part # for my specific model/year). After the swap the 4Runner averaged around 200 degrees and after climbing a steep hill hitting a little over 210, that is what you saw in the pic. I also noticed a change when I had the thermostat on my 1st gen Taco replaced. I should have kept my old thermostats as the engine ran much cooler on them.

Toyota must have made some changes to the newer thermostats? I have no clue. :suspicious:

You mean the blendmount scangauge mounting kit? If so, I installed one on my 1st gen Taco in combination with my Cipa 36500 (auto dimmer/temp/compass/bottom pointing driver/passenger maplights) rearview mirror and love it! Just fyi, the mounting kit will NOT mount to the neck of an existing 3rd gen 4Runner OEM rear view mirror. You will need an aftermarket mirror that has a round neck like the Cipa or Gentex and epoxy a mounting button to the windshield, a little DIY work but worth it IMHO.

I wasn't able to squeeze the SG in the second din pocket, that is, with the plastic pocket brand that I had at the time. The pocket was slightly smaller in the front so I had to used a dremel to cut a box at the top to drop the SG in and then drill a hole in the back large enough to plug in the cable... not to mention inhaling a ton of plastic fumes along the way with the cutting. :yuck:

If you do this, make sure you cut out a separate slot so you can remove the cable or you will end up with a SG stuck in the pocket and the cable still plugged into it like I almost did. :doh:

Thank you very much for the quick reply! And do you think there is a way you could close the gap beside the ScanGauge so if you were to put something in their you wouldent have to take out the whole din to get out what you dropped in it.

That's exactly what I was thinking of Doing. What a coinsidence. Thank you so much for this I will be doing it forsure now. I am now dead set on getting one. Flush mounting was the only thing holding me back. I don't like when things are all sticking out and half a$$ looking. Thanks again for all your help.!

OK so I finally installed the SC2 I got for my birthday and I think its pretty awesome.

One question though .... Why is mine reading F Coolant Temp (usually 190 in town) since I thought my 97 Limited didn't have a valid AT temp sensor/? Is it reading something else?

Thats your coolant temp. F Water Temp. F is for Fahrenheit.

I know BUT I'm asking why it is visible at all on my 97.

I assume then that my 97 does have coolant F sensor but not a trans F sensor.

Of course it has a coolant temp sender, that's how your dash gauge works!
