Where is the blackout factory rack mod?

I have searched and searched. I can't find it. I want to black out my TRDP factory rails. I found the threads to delete and to add cross rails, but I can't find threads on options to black them out.

I know you guys have done it. Sorry, I at least tried to find them.

Use the roof rack delete thread to learn how to remove the rack. Paint the rack and reinstall.

Thanks, yea I assumed that, but I'm assuming some paints will just chip away. I figured someone had a thread that mentioned specific paints, powder coating or platidip, etc. Seems like the plastidip will just get damaged too. And I think I would have to take it somewhere to powder coat it.

I used Rustoleum Bed Liner spray. Sprayed them in-situ. Only sprayed the sides and a bit around the top and bottom edge, the parts that show the most. Looks fine and was quick and easy. And bed liner is easy to touch up when they get dinged.

That looks good. My Yakima racks will mount right to it, but I'm thinking it may get scratched up easy. I may just need to add extra coats. I'm also exploring carbon fiber. I can do fiberglass work, but I am not sure how durable it will be since I will be clamping Yakimas right to it.

What is "in-situ?" Is that like without removing them or something?

They used to for the longest time but now people think they are worth $300. I'd invest in a real rack before dumping $300 on an oem rack

I just discovered aluminum and carbon fiber are a horrible combination. There are potential corrosion issues, different expansion rates and the obvious trouble of getting the fiberglass to stick to the aluminum...

Not at the moment and I already have one person in line if I end up doing that.
I Really don't want to ship this stuff but I suppose it may come to that because more then I don't want to ship I hate to just toss. I have a lot of the OEM stuff still

Cool, and I meant creating carbon fiber with epoxy or resin. That's what I was considering. I saw that 3m stuff. Looks pretty cool.

KHS - I am a huge proponent of Powder Coating. You may have caught that prior. It's tough as nails. Just beware that powder coating aluminum is a different animal than magnetic steel and requires a different approach.

Cool. Thanks for that. I did some research myself this morning on it and then called some family about it too. It seems like finding that service in my area is going to be challenging. And doing myself at this time is unreasonable.

I'm getting ready to have a cooler rack fabricated (Thursday) and they are painting the aluminum after etching it. I was pretty stoked about it and may see if they can paint the racks.

I guess I need to do some research on that too...
