Where to mount fire extinguisher in 3rd gen?

I am in the same boat, I was going to mount one on the rollbar I just installed...but would also like to know a good size or product recommendation?

The roll bar is great place if you have one mounted. If you do not have one mounted it is a little more tricky depending on size of the extinguisher. If you get the smakkest Auto one then you can mount next to the transmission tunnel on passenger side. or on transmission tunnel in backseat foot area. Both of those locations are easy reach. If you run the next size up you may be able to mount in those locations. The best thing to do is decide on the fire extinguisher and then play with locations yourself. I would suggest a 2.5lb myself but they come in 1lb on up.

Please make sure you get one specifically for Auto/RV use. The home ones are not rated to meet the variety of fires you can have in an Auto. Here is one site you can go to. First Alert and Kidde also make good products. Article on reviews of extingishers Best Fire Extinguisher - Fire Extinguisher Reviews - Kidde Fire Extinguisher - Auto Fire Extinguishers it does not say how many or what extinguishers were compared though. My preference is to get one with a status gauge so you can look at a glance and see it is still good.

I have a 5# mounted to the floor, just inside the driver side rear passenger door. Right next to the seat cushion. It's close enough to the driver but is out of the way. It's also out of the way for the passengers feet.

I have one mounted in the passenger side rear hatch sidewall compartment. Probably not optimal if my own truck was on fire but fits nicely in there with my tow strap and EMT bag. Still pretty accessible.

The head is tucked in toward the rear. I just bolted the mounting bracket down and clipped it in.

This is where I've got mine....

It's a Kidde, rated 10 B:C. That covers flammable liquids (ie gasoline, oil), and energized electrical equipment. The only other rating you may want to consider is D, which covers flammable metals, but since we don't have a whole lot of Magnesium on our engines, I wouldn't worry about that one.

Also, don't get an A:B:C class extinguisher. The agent they use in A class extinguishers actually melts at about 300 degrees, and if sprayed on an engine, it will be very difficult if not impossible to remove because it will melt and bond to the surfaces of your engine. Plus there's not alot of trash, wood, or leaves in your engine bay.

The only reason I could see for considering an A class extinguisher would be if you wanted it to put out an out of control campfire or something.

Finally, you don't have to get an "AUTO" fire extingisher. You'll pay more because it's an "AUTO" and they are usually rated 5 B:C, just look for a 10 B:C and you'll be fine w/that. The numerical rating is a measure of how large a fire the extinguisher can put out, and only applies to the "B" rating.

I've got mine in the rear cargo area, attached to the passenger side pillar. I popped the trim out, drilled some holes and voila! I almost always wheel with my back window down, so then I can just reach in and grab it. It's up and out of the way, and very secure.

I have a kidde auto/marine one mounted to the rear seatback, it came with the bracket and was about $10 at mennards. I posted a pic in a thread in the accessories forum. It isn't as accesible as some others here, but its better than nothing.

I am thinking of getting one of the 10B:C items, maybe off Amazon, and mounting it on the roll bar. I think the majority of the guys have gone with the Kiddie brand?

Fire Extinguisher on amazon, looks like a decent price...but what are the recommendations for a mount if I were to put it on the roll bar??

There was a group buy for a 5th Gen mount for between the seat rails, but I never saw the conclusion of that (you can buy it from some online retailer after the fact now). It'd be great to have a driver or passenger seat mounted option for a 5 lb. bottle. Maybe we could talk Ellis Precision or Rago Fab. into making something?
