V6 or v8? None of them provide awesome gains as the stock system isn't bad at all. Personally id go afe for the v6 and volant for the v8.

The advertised gains is marketing hype (you may gain a few horses but that's all). I had the popcharger on my Z. I found that it gave the exhaust sound a deeper throat sound (which was cool), but didn't do anything for added horses. It's looks good too. But if you want to pay the price. 2 cents...

The AFE works good on a stock truck but to bring the most outta it you need tuning. other intakes don't provide enough airflow and some even cause MAF sensor errors.

This doesn't exactly answer the original poster's question. But since the thread is titled 'which cai' I wanted to weigh in on my recent experience.
I purchased a K&N CAI and couldn't wait to bolt it on..

Before I even got 1/2 mile out of my driveway I was thoroughly disappointed. It made a loud "plastic" vibration sound under load accelerating (2500-4000k rpm). The vibration was so bad I honestly thought the tube had a crack in it.
I tried to like it for a couple of days, I loosened and readjusted it a few times to try to reduce the horrible vibrations. Nothing worked to reduce the vibration, it is just inherent to the poor design I feel.
Build quality was to Chinese standards imho.

Also noticed mpg went from 17.5 to about 15.9, and not due to lead footing it.
The exhaust note sounds just barely better than a ricer in most ways, it did bring out some growl, but overall I was not happy with it and couldn't wait to put the factory air box back on it.
No noticeable increase in power or performance from the K&N, if your looking for something that 'sounds' faster, you might be happy.

Unfortunately I cannot say enough bad about the K&N. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Not the v-8 model for 03 and 04's. Maybe the aluminum tube model would have produced different results? But I think we have very good intake systems from the factory, so it's more of a 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' kind of thing I think.

Since uninstalling and returning it mpg have settled back to around 17.5 around town. (these are mpg from the computer bear in mind.. well known to be off...not worked out by hand)

I got a Volant for my truck a couple weeks ago. I gained 1mpg in the city with it and that is also with me getting on it a little more. Yeah it is louder when you get on it but what did you expect when there is a huge round filter.

I usually go with K&N but I gave Volant a chance this time, I like the box that the filter sits in vs out in the open like the K&N system. Also there are 2 K&N systems. I had called and talked to the guys there about it and there is more gain with the plastic pipe vs the chrome. He said the metal one can not be bent as much as the plastic so that is why the plastic is able to make more power. I also think the plastic is better because it doesn't soak up heat from the motor vs the chrome one.

Hope that helps you out a bit.

I like my Volant.

Just to expand on your stock system comment; I recently got one of those USB OBDII scanners that provide live data to your smartphone and one of the things it will tell you is the intake temperature. To your point, the stock system is VERY good and I'm not sure a CAI is going to gain anything other than the filter might give you some advantages, depending on your choice. I was driving in the city last week and watching my air intake temps and while moving, the difference was only a few degrees from ambient. When you stop for a light or something, it obviously goes up, but I was impressed with how low the air temps stayed while moving along. The 4R stock setup is very, very nice.

I took the hydrocarbon filter out of my stock airbox and think its made a noticeable difference in how well the engine breathes, plus the obnoxious sulfur odor is not near as bad now with the rear window down as before.
Acceleration and rev response improved and it has a twinge better exhaust note as well.

So you watched the intake air temp and are saying it is very very nice compared to what? How do you know a Volant or any other intake isn't pulling in cooler air vs stock? Did you test them side by side in the same conditions? Plus you are not considering the increased air flow of a different filter, intake tube design, etc.

And as far as it not giving much gain over stock, I beg to differ. Both my butt dyno and other actual dyno gains that have been posted on this forum and online have been shown otherwise. So to each their own. I feel my money was well spent on the Volant.

Here is one link I found quick showing the gain of the Volant.
