Which Dashcam To Buy?

I've been thinking of getting a dash cam for the car, the kind that records all the time when you are driving. They are really popular in Russia where everyone drives like crazy and a lot of the cops are crooked. I just went to Walmart and 3 cars almost hit me just getting on the freeway!
I can't decide which kind to get though, there are square, round and bullet shaped ones as well as angled ones. I don't want to stick anything on the windshield because I need to put up a sun shield when I stop and that's the way most of them mount so I was thinking of getting one of the angled ones and stick it on the visor or a divided on that has a small camera and a separate DVR you can hide away in the glove box. I don't know if one that records in 720P would be OK or if I should get one that's 1080P with HDMI output. You can buy a good video camcorder cheaper than one of these but they have a feature that turns them on when you start the car then turn it off when you stop and they start over when they run out of memory and keep running so you don't miss anything during a trip so they don't need manual operation.
Deal Extreme has a ton of them listed under "car DVR" that look pretty good for about $100 and I found a divided one on Ebay that looks pretty good for $189 but the seller doesn't have such a good feedback rating.

Last month I bought a DVR-047 dashcam on ebay. It's been great and for $60, it's quality is surprisingly good. Mine is mounted to the windshield right behind the mirror and if I had a sunshield I would probably just put a small cut in it to allow for the mount.

The DVR-047 dashcam gets good reviews unless you have a bad copy plus they are only $30 now but I think the little lights on the front look weird. A 97% rating for the seller is pretty low and means you may never get it though.

I bought my cam from an ebay seller with 99.7% rating and 20000+ transactions so I was not concerned about buying from them. My research showed that the cheaper ones were exactly that, cheap. (Yes, mine is still a cheap unit compared to some of the competition). I know what you mean about the night vision lights on the front, but they work well and since they are facing forward i can't see them most of the time.

Regarding your battery time question, I get 2.5 hours continuous operation. That's with it set to record a max resolution, 2 min clips with audio and with the monitor screen closed. Each 2 min .AVI file is 97Mb.

I found a temporary dashcam solution, I'll just stick my Sony handycam
on the dash! With night vision that can record in the dark it can work pretty well at night and it also has anti-shake for steady pictures. The summer heat will probably melt the tapes though.
BTW, there's an insurance fraud scam going on now in Canada where someone will pass you then cut in front and hit the breaks or even stop and backup and hit you. Then they claim it's your fault and a lot of passengers jump out and start complaining of whiplash. The problem is they did it to someone who had a cam on the dash that filmed the whole thing and it was on the news on Canadian TV. Then a reporter tracked down the scammer to interview him and his name was exposed so now he's getting death threats! LOL
If it's going on in Canada it's just a matter of time until they start doing it here too except that a lot of drivers carry guns so if someone is hit in the front they might jump out and shoot the fraud scam driver which would end the whole problem right there I guess.

I run a finevue dashcam that I bought off of Amazon. The clarity is actually pretty good and has gps, g sensors etc. I have it hardwired to my truck and it will record while parked if it detects motion. I threw a 32gb SD card in it and it will record for an entire day if I need it to. I have it hidden in the tinted visor strip on my 4runner and so far works great. I lan on getting one for my pickup aswell.
 
I'm just starting to research dash cams...with all of the retired people around here driving like kamikazes I think I should have something to record while driving.

One concern being that I live in the Phoenix AZ area is the summertime heat. I would likely have to remove it from the car (at least during the summer) otherwise the plastic could melt!

There are a lot of them on Amazon so it is taking a while to read through all of the specs and reviews.

So I've been kicking around the idea of a dash cam ever since the meteor hit in Russia. It's amazing how many people caught it on camera because of the dash cams. I heard that everyone has one over there because some crazy things happen and they need proof for the law enforcement. But non the less, so many people caught the effect of a meteor hitting that otherwise would not had happen without all the cams.

Today I seen a ford explorer in front of me and what I thought I saw might not have been what I interpreted but!!

The guy had one of those wire cargo dividers that people use to keep their dogs in the cargo area. And it looked like a camera was fitted into one of the little squares directly in the center of the whole thing. It got me thinking what a perfect way to mount a rear cam, it would be secure, no need to worry about wiring because it's installed within the vehicle. And if it's a wide lense you might even get a view out both rear side windows as well!

Just a thought and I haven't any funds to be the guinea pig for everyone so if this interest someone please try it out and let's us know how it works.
 
Just some input. I've found that when I have my GoPro mounted on my motorcycle helmet, other motorists give me a wide berth.

So you may want to consider a way to make your camera visible to other motorists. For some reason, seeing a camera gives people pause.....like a conscience.

I've been thinking of painting my GoPros fluorescent.
