Which Models Leave Fender Flare Holes In The Body?

So I have been trying to research this for quite a while and end up getting confused with pictures and misinformation.


I am currently looking for a 4runner and want to remove all fender flares but do not want to deal with the holes in the fenders once they are removed. What 3gen models/years should I be looking for?

SR5 models dont have the holes when the flares are removed.

I am sort of new here so someone can correct me if I'm wrong. If you want to stay away from fender flares stay away from the Limited models. SR5's come with 3 different types of trim. Two of them have the fender flares and similar to what the Limited has but one of them has a small chrome strip that goes around the fender. I'm not sure if the flares on the SR5's have holes behind them, but I would say your best bet is to find the ones with a chrome strip, it looks like the picture below.

That has been my experience w/ SR5s too, or you could look for a base model which will be close to a sure thing...

When I bought my 4runner I unfortunately got the ones with the chrome strips and wanted the Limited flares, so I'm in the process of putting flares on my SR5. It's ok though because it came with 30k miles :banana:

this is partially correct. SR5 models with the chrome trim and the medium width black trim do not use/leave holes in the body (in the painted body panels). SR5 models with the molded plastic trim (painted to match the body) do use holes in the body that you probably don't want to leave uncovered.

thanks everyone. NOW I get it. I am looking for the chrome strips (Obviously) or the smaller black flares.

I have a SR5 with body-painted large (often called Limited) flares. Kinda wish I didn't, but good to know there are holes behind them...I had wondered. Le sigh...
