which pioneer speakers are the best direct fit replacement currently?

Hi All

Looking to finally do a speaker replacement front and rear in the old girl. Which currently available pioneers (or commonly available brands - except for sony yuck) will fit directly in with a minimum of fuss, especially for the front tweeter location? I will be mounting the crossovers in the doors and would like to have a selectable tweeter slope cut to fine tune maybe.

Also for the rears?

I'm in New Zealand so it's hard to find some more of the esoteric stuff, even if it is good.

I don't really have a budget as such, it's just more what is easily available.

Check out Crutchfield's website. You can enter your vehicle and it will give you a list of speakers and head units that work with our 4runners.

I like the Infinity Reference and Kappa series but the price has gone way up. If you find the References on sale buy them.

Crutchfield will help you with the fronts. For the rears you will need to do some trimming. Go with 5.25"

Also do a SEARCH. There are several how threads for the rear speakers.

Polk DB series car speakers have beaten out almost every other more expensive speaker on the market. Best sound quality for the price. I have ran infinity, pioneer, Kenwood, and Polk is night and day better. I miss my Polk. My 4runner has Kenwood so never replaced them but thinking about it.

You can put 5.25 in the rear with a 2dollar spacer plate made from a cheap cutting board material.

I won't knock Polk. I love my Infinity Kappas (properly powered of course) but Polk are very good.

This is what I used when I replaced my blown original rear speakers, worked perfectly! I plan on buying their 6.5" adapters when I replace my front speakers.

I wish to have a stock look to the thing.

As in my OP, I am in NZ and don't have access to items from Crutchfield, plus I don't tend to trust "opinions" from such large and generic retail stores. I bet the guy writing the website has probably never even seen a 4runner/surf!!

Oh I forgot to mention I will not be using an amp or woofer so the speakers need to be reasonably efficient from a headunit.
I'm just looking for a reasonable sounding upgrade from the crap that's in there.

Sure. I get it. My setup is 100% stock looking. The 6.5" components are in the door with the factory door panel. The tweeters are in the door underneath the factory limited tweeter cover as pictured.
