Which rack for RTT?

I personally have the Gobi now, it make the rig looks AWESOME.

But if ALL YOU WANT TO DO is to mount a RTT. I'll give you the UNBEATABLE, SUPER LOW-COST solution (lower cost than ANYONE ELSE can give you):

Mount it directly to your roof top rails..... DONE!

By the way, RTT mount on your roof and fit under 7' 6" garage is cutting it close......

You can:
1) sell your 4runner and buy a tacoma, and mount the tent above your truck bed
2) get an adventure trailer

Do NOT fret, there are solutions.
First off would be to reconfigure your garage door tracks and opener.
Ditch the current center mounted opener, and go with a Liftmaster that's sidemounted. It will easily get you an additional few precious inches.
Sell the old one for $50
Buy a new one for .. been a while, 3-500$, gain a lot of headroom.

I had to get some Thule bars to mount my Tepui Ayer on my stealth. But I ran into the problem of not being able to use my ARB awning the way the mounts are. Next thing to do is just weld on 2-3" risers + square bars across on the existing crossbars, that should fix my problem.

I agree. I too have a GOBI stealth and if I were to do it again would go with a flat rack.

Old thread I know but can you and [MENTION=46138]chmura[/MENTION] comment on why you wish you had gone with a flat rack over the Stealth? I'm debating between the Gobi Stealth and the K9. I like the look of the Stealth better but it would good to have aluminum due to weight and corrosion resistance. Also, do either of you carry Kayaks? Not sure which one would be better for that. Thanks!

I found that with a basket style rack you are pretty limited what you can do with it. The Gobi is narrower than the K9 (K9 is 49 inches in width) and I always felt like the room up there was cramped due to the permanent cross bars. I always had to play legos with my cargo up there so they fit certain positions inside the basket.

Since I want to purchase a hard shell tent like the Autohome and James Baroud tents, a perfectly flat racks suits these tents better. The Gobi has a raised front bar to make room for an LED light bar and if I wanted to install a hard shell tent I would have to make 1/2-3/4 inch spacers that sit ontop of Gobis cross bars to lift the tent up some so the front of the tent can sit level and clear the front bar. Sure I could of made this work but I did not want to increase my center of gravity.

Yes I will load a kayak on my K9. I think both tents would do a great job in carrying a kayak, but with the K9 rack it would be easier to install these on there.

Since you are on the subject, dont forget about prinsu. I have compared mine to gobi and it seems to be maybe a little lower profile. I think it sits closer to the roof but I couldnt be sure. Not to mention it is 100% aluminum and weighs next to nothing.

I chose the FrontRunner Slimline II 3/4 and it's looking like a Simpson 3 tent will likely go on it.

Officially, yes... but I didn't drill for mine. I used rubber cabinet feet like several others have used. They sit perfectly in the rain channel on top of the plastic gutter.

But if I was to do it all over again, I'd go with SSO's slimline rack. It does not require drilling, and they seem to have way better quality control. I can vouch for the fact that Prinsu is a crap-shoot in this regard. You never know what you'll get wrong from that bunch.

Prinsu and SSO make flat full rack options that cost a lot less than GOBI. I went with the Prinsu 7/8 option, which is no-drill. Lot's of folks running RTTs on them, especially on the Tacomas.

Yes that is why I am asking. I may seek a full rack for my james baroud without any drilling. the front end is not mounted. It is hung like a swimming diving board that it bounces when I drive at 40 or higher. and forget to mention that I have LFD crossbars. they are low profile and that is very hard to reach under the RTT to fasten nuts.
