Which Steering Rack did you buy?

my Rack and Pinion is now leaking on the passenger side, and I knew it was going to go... just didn't know when...

So I'm starting this thread, asking the following questions


Where did you go to buy your replacement Rack and Pinion?
How long have you been using it?
Have you had any issues?
What is your overall impression?
Would you buy it again?

I'm leaning Napa or OEM... Napa is 5 days out.
I have called around, and O'Riely's has one in stock for 316+60 core
life time reman... how many time's will I replace the lifetime?

any help or tips... and obviously the questions.

From what I've been seeing, people are saying to stick with OEM, which will run around $480 -500. There's a few "upgraded" ones out there, maybe [MENTION=67615]Dirtco[/MENTION] can shed light on that. But for the most of us, OEM.

I have a NAPA. Been over a year. the ITRE that it comes with have a lot of slop, mainly the driver side. If i were to do it again i'd just fork over for a toyota one that comes with toyota ITREs. I would do a cost analysis on what a rack without ITRESs would be and getting toyota ones to put on it VS a ready to install Toyota one.

On a side note the aftermarket ITRE are the issue. I had emailed proforge about their ITRE and they insist they are equal or better than OEM. not sure it's worth the test.

all great info... something that I'm coming to the table with is I replaced my ITRE's recently with OEM... so I could take those and use them just fine with napa rack.

I've been leaning OEM more I read about these... camel back has it for 557.60 and I can do pickup...

I just got one from them, its sitting in the box in the house, waiting to be installed. Good deal that you can do pickup, as they charged me $40 extra for shipping.
 
When mine goes it will be replaced with an OEM. Whatever you do, stay far away from "lifetime" O'Reilly crap. Unless you like doing shit over two or three times before you pony up and go OEM.
 
I recently replaced my rack with a NEW Napa rack. It would make groaning noises even when no air was in the system plus it would rattle over bumps when the steering wheel was in a certain position. I was able to return it, then I ordered an OEM rack. It cost me my time to replace the rack twice and I had to pay to get an alignment twice.
BUY OEM!
 
I bought the AAE 3273N which is a brand new (not reman'd) rack. I got it from RockAuto for around $230 shipped, no core required.

So far it's help up to the 35's lol.
 
I went OEM rack.Local dealer made me pay 527 out the door. They had it the next day.

Puking p/s fluid at the input shaft. Feels a little funky to drive. Makes squeaky noises. Input shaft wobbling.
What is your overall impression?
It sucked.
Would you buy it again?
NO WAY!
Who in their right mind wants to install one of these more than once?

Could have been packed better for shipping but that's my only complaint. So far.
Would you buy it again?
Am hoping it won't need replacing at least until I hit over 500,000 miles....
 
In case anyone is interested, I just completely rebuilt a rack with all OEM parts. I updated the rack guide to the newer version as well. Here's the part list and what I paid. I ordered from 2 different locations because Amayama was out of stock for one of the tie rod ends and I accidentally ordered the old version of the rack guide the first time. Shipping from Amayama was a lot, but I had other items in the order too so it should be cheaper for just the rack parts.
