While removing head: timing chain question?

I am replacing a blown head gasket and just now took the rocker assembly off, how do I keep the cam gear there while taking the head off? I saw some picture of people who did it they left it sitting there, basically using the guides to hold it up.

How do you hold the cam gear up while removing the head without letting the chain fall off the crank at the bottom, can it fall off the crank at the bottom?

Put a zip tie around the chain just under the top gear and it will hold it in place. If you're worried about it dropping in you can also use another tie on the top of the gear to use as a handle to pull it back up too.

Kind of like this:

And unless your timing cover is cracked there is a guide around the bottom gear that will keep the chain lined up there if you go easy on it...

oh ya I remember that, a metal circular piece on the cover near the crank, i got a new cover cuz my old 1 broke that off lol...

Thanks :)
