White letters out. Geolander ats or Destination AT?

I was quoted pretty much the same price for both tires. Whichever ones I get, I will be mounting them white letters out. With that look in mind, which route would you go?

I'm leaning towards the Yokos. Overall, from what I read both tires seem pretty comparable.


UPDATE: For future thread searchers. I decided on the Firestone Destination ATs. I had them mounted today. See pic.

My wife runs the same Yoko's on her 05', awesome tire for wet/dry/gravel but honestly they blow on ice! If you run a dedicated winter tire then by all means get the Yoko's.

I love my destinations. They're quiet, light and responsive. I got the P rated 285's and I've abused them pretty bad on rocks but they haven't popped yet, even at 12psi. I have busted a few tpms valves though! Check out my build for pics, you might fing a few...

Do not buy Firestone Destinations.

I hate them with a passion that burns brighter then the sun. For one, their customer service is terrible. Second, gravel and rocks chunk the crap out of them (I have a whole lug missing). Third, they get no traction in any wet surface and are incredibly dangerous. Fourth, they aren't that quiet.

Are your wife's stock size 265/65/17? If so did they come with white lettering? I'm looking on the yoko website and they show the 65 as black wall and the 70 as white lettered. I'm assuming that mean they dont make the 65 with white letters?

I'll say my experience with the Destination AT's has been nothing but positive. My dad has ran the 265/70/16 P rated AT's on his Tundra for the last 10 years or so. He does a lot of highway driving (~100 miles a day) and a lot of off road as well. The off road isn't "wheeling", but rather dirt roads/trails in the mountains to get to various hunting locations. There are a lot of rocks and they've held up great. They have done very well in all conditions. We don't get much snow around here but what little we get they've done great. All around performance has been excellent for the price. I'll also mention the Destination AT's are the number 1 AT tire according to Tire Rack's surveys.

I have the Geolander HTS tires on mine (although not in the pics in my album) and I've always had Geo's on all of my 3 trucks. Excellent tire that is quiet and an all around good performer.

They are 265/70/17, no wheel spacers with zero rub. Tires are mounted black wall out, but they do have white lettering. It's not a directional tire so obviously you can mount either way. Save yourself the stress and call Discount Tire Direct. Don't forget to tell them you're a forum member, I think you still get $50 off your purchase.

There are going to be as many opinions as there are tires. Some will like tire A...but hate tire B...and some will like tire B and hate tire A. All are valid opinions...because that's just what they are...opinions. I LOVE my Coopers...and HATE Goodyear...but that's just my opinion.

I ran P285 Firestone Destinations. I had totally opposite experience from the guy above ^^^^. Mine were EXCELLENT in rain, snow, were VERY quiet on the road, and gripped well. Never had a flat. Loved those tires. In mud they were not good, but what AT tire is? My one and only complaint was tread life. At 25,000 miles they were already down to 5/32 to 6/32. If I had kept them...by 40,000 they would have been legally bald.

Cooper Discoverer AT3 is THE best AT tire on the market in 2013. Plus it's made in USA. And the prices are great, esp. online. I would get that tire and skip everything else. (I've run dozens of different ATs and MTs on dozens of different 4x4s. I'm sort of a tire guy).

I have the same tires and I agree they are probably the BEST truck tires I've owned over the past 40+ years. But that's MY opinion...

+ 1 for the Yoko Geo's. Although I had the HTS's. I went in for AT's, but they only had these in stock. Fantastic tire. I put 75K miles on them and they easily still had 6-10K left when I sold them. I wouldn't hesitate to put Yokohama tires on anything.

I can't speak to the Firestones since I haven't owned any. That fiasco in the 90's with the Ford Exploder Firestones killing people just left a bad taste in my mouth for the brand.

I had Geolander AT-S's put on my '04 Tacoma back in 2007. They had ROWL (Raised Outline White Letters) then, don't know if they still do but a web search should be able to tell you.

Here's a pic of mine mounted with the white letters out. Mine were in 235/85/16 though:

Pretty decent tires overall. I took them to the desert twice (Moab and the Nevada deserts) as well as having them in the rockies and they seemed to do very well in all kinds of terrain.

My opinion only.. but I would never put 265/65s back on my rig. Even if I had never lifted it and never cared about the look and never cared to go offroad...I still wouldn't use 265/65 ever again.

Reason why: The speedometer counts too fast which means that the odo probably counts too fast (verified multiple times via GPS) in mine...which means the mileage is racking up faster than actual. That sucks for warranty purposes and for resale value. So, 265/70 would be the default replacement for me even if I was a guy who wanted to stay stock.
