Who Actually Follows 10,000 mile oil change schedule?

It's true.....Castrol caused group three to be considered Synthetic. And you only need to blend about 75% group three to Dino to get the Synthetic label so even worse. Mobil 1 that has ''Energy Conserving'' on it is all group three oil. The 10/50 still has PAO's and good add package in it so I use it in the 22R and motorcycles.

I change mine every 5k. Never was a believer of 10k life cycles. Even worse are the lifetime fluids.....

My father's boss, the company owner, had a late '60s Caddy convertible that went 200,000 miles without an oil change. He just kept adding oil and driving it from DC to Florida and DC to Vegas, etc. It was still running when he traded it in.
I'm thinking it was a '68 because that was my first year of college, but it could have been a year earlier.
Back then a lot of cars leaked and burned enough oil that you could just add oil and drive. Of course, a lot of them never made 100,000 miles and were bad oil burners by 80,000.
Heck, in the '50s oil filters weren't all that common on new cars. Some of the early '50s models sucked air into the crankcase through slots in the valve cover - dirt and dust and all of that. That's why the oil change interval was 1,000 or maybe 2,000.

Not on a 4runner - but a friend I knew in college went 80k on an oil change in a Honda Civic. Then seized the engine. When her dad asked why she didn't change the oil - she said "I change it at least once a month when I get gas - it always has some on the metal thing" and we learned that "checking" and "changing" are two very different things. Because she bought it new it was easy to know how many miles. BUT - it did go 80,000 miles without an oil change. I'd say that's pretty impressive. Especially considering that those little engines only use about 3 quarts of oil.
I'd bet you could get 100k out of a 1GR.

you're required to do that 5k mile service for your warranty, the 5k mile light will remind you to record that you inspected everything in your service manual

I do mine with the RCI plates on and just drop the whole cartridge straight down in one piece. I don't undo the little drain and I don't spill any on the plate. Crack it loose and let it drain a moment then un-thread it the rest of the way.
