Who do so few people list their location?

I have learned a ton as a member of this forum and am grateful for that. I am sure that will continue.

But I am curious about why there are so many members here that do not list their location when they are setting up their profile.

So guys who have no location listed, do everyone a favor and take 30 seconds now to go back and edit your profile and add it.

Why do I think it matters?

Get togethers
Tool exchange/borrowing
Parts exchange and trading
Experience and sharing know how
Hitting the trails together
Drinking a few beers

I work in technology. More specifically I deal with online fraud, identity theft, etc. I can tell you that a lot of people are just flat out paranoid of what the Internet is. They think that if you have a userid and it says (for example) "Birmingham" beside it that all the sudden your house will get repossessed. We all know that you have to be responsible on the Internet. How much paranoia you apply to that is up to the individual.

Maybe in smaller towns and such but listing an area or large city or metro area there should be no risk and it is helpful to know where members are from.

agreed i think everyone is paranoid id theft sucks but then again if someone only has my sign on and address what could they get??????????????

I personally think its a bad idea to be listing ones specific location on internet forums . I also never post pictures of me or my family on internet forums. There are alot of f$%$%ked up people on this planet , who have jealousy issues, mental issues or are outright crazy.

Scammers and hackers are a bigtime business online, and I see no reason to give them any extra weapons to possibly infiltrate my familys privacy.

for me, its no being paranoid, its being realistic and logical. Ive seen many online forums , where people list their exact town they live in..and then a few months later, they decide to list pictures of themself or their family, and then months later they post pictures of their new car or home , which often shows their licencse tag # or very descriptive pictures of their property/ home..etc...

so what happens, is after a certain amount of time, it would not take alot of energy for some looney bird to track down another person, with all this free information they have provided online, in chat forums.

The internet is a great and useful tool, and can also be a dangerous place, if you dont use it with caution and insight.

Some people call it paranoid, I call it reality.

I disagree..anytime a person decides to list personal information , such as their location/ pictures, etc online , there is a risk. Anyone can often read this information anonymously , without having to even sign up to the online forums.

IMHO, it makes more sense to privately PM a member, if you have the desire to " hook up with them " and privately request where they live.

I understand your logic and certainly am not arguing it. Here's my viewpoint, if the bad guys want you, they'll get you. I won't give them any details but I am pretty sure my name and city are the easy part. Again, I see your viewpoint, but being in the industry has skewed my perspective.

I try and make sure to not make the bad guys/looney birds job easier .

every little detail you give them for free, is one extra piece of the puzzle they dont have to work to get.

A quick story...about 2 years ago, my wife decided she wanted to join facebook . I told her it may be a bad idea . 4 months later, her bank account got hacked into ...first time in her life this ever happened.

coincidence ? maybe....but im just not the type of person who likes to give ammunition to online looney tunes/hackers.

These types of looney birds, will usually go after others who are easiest targets....giving them personal info for free, increases the chances of becoming a " easier target".

Ive never met anyone who seems to think like this. A house gets repossesed when the owner does not pay their mortage for a period of time.
