Who Has A Sunroof --- Opinions Wanted

Hello All,

I am looking to get an 05 Runner here in the next week or two. I am trying to make my final decisions and an hung up on a few things. :bash:

One of the being the sunroof.
I have never had a sunroof but have had a convertible. The past 6 years i have had a Tacoma. Im looking at getting the 4Runner with the sunroof. I have just hear so many stories of cars back in the day with sunroofs and haveing leaking issues and other problems.

Who has one and would you do it again. Have you had issues or has it been a perfect addition?

My Opinion

If you love the idea of a sunroof, get one. It's great when it works, but it does remove 2 inches of headroom, so be aware of it.

I have had the rattle TSB done on mine (as many others have as well), and recently the entire sunroof had to be replaced (29,000 miles) because of a complete failure.

Several others have had sunroof failures. I wish I could find out how many fail as a percentage of the vehicles that have them.

On Summer days, with the windows all down and the sunroof open, you can't beat it. It's like a convertible.

It think would be wise to purchase an extended warrantee if one decides to get the sun roof option.

i have the 05 sunroof and it works perfectly. Eventhough i 've only put 12,000 miles on it, so far nothing wrong with it, no noises or leaks. I also reccommend getting the extra warranty on it! But so far nothing yet!

If you had convertible before, you would not be happy without a sunroof in your 4runner. Remember to roll down rear window as well. Extended waranty is recommended.

Having had a convertible once myself, I swore that, from that time on, all my future vehicles would either be convertible or have a sunroof. I LOVE having open space above my head. As for the loss of head room that results from having a sunroof I can tell you that I am 6 feet tall, sit on a cushion (back issues), have the seat adjust as high as it will go, and I still have plenty of head room when the top is closed.
I have a 2000 4Runner w/sunroof and, in the year that I have owned it, it has never leaked. Not even the slightest drip in the heaviest of storms.

I say "Go for it!" with regard to the sunroof. I have one in my '05 SR5 and am glad that I got one equipped with it. Rather than having it wide open, I find that I use the "tilt" option most of the time. Just a little bit of ventilation on those nice days when it is cool enough not to need the A/C but warm enough for me to want a little more fresh air.

I have heard of them failing, but my vehicle will be under warranty the entire time I have it. I did a three-year/36,000 mile lease, so I ain't worried much about it.

Yeah i am probably going to go with it. But mine will be out of warantee before 3 years so i was wondering if i could get an extended warantee on just the sunroof But like i said i think im going to go for it. Have you had any of the issues you have seen posted on the board?

Sounds good. I am 6'-0" as well so i am not to worried about the head room.

So i am assuming you like your sunroof? Have you had any "Issues" with it? The extended warantee. Can you get that just on the sunroof or are you talking about getting it for the whole vehicle.

Yes get the sunroof. I love mine and use it all the time. For all of you guys and gals that are above the age of 36 and only use your 4runner to and from your blue-collared job: One day on the way to work, open ALL the windows, back one and the sunroof too. Its pretty cool, and exactly like a convertible with rollbars. Plus the aerodynamics equal out the wind so you can go 60-75 and theres hardly any wind. Just make sure theres no loose paper anywhere. I also enjoy opening the sunroof when a girl is in the front seat so when i close it her hair starts getting sucked out and then caught in it :satan: just kidding. It is deffenitly a great addition, i know 4runners with out them and they regret it.

Try test driving, or even sitting in a 4Runner with the sunroof. This will make up your mind. I'm about 6'2", and I cannot fit in a 4runner with the sunroof. My hair touches the ceiling. It was VERY uncomfortable. That's why I went without a sunroof. It would have been nice to have one, but my neighbor (who also has a 4th gen 4Runner) had his spontaneously shatter, as well as have some other problems with it --- and that in itself made me glad I don't have one.

I should also add that you don't need a sunroof for the convertable effect. Just roll down the front windows as well as the rear window, and you'll get a nice breeze that enters the truck from behind, and exits the front windows. Sometimes I just crack the rear window and the two left windows to get the same breeze but without the noise.

I love my sunroof, would have a hard time buying another car without one. my step brother is 6'0 and my step dad is 6'1 and they both drive my truck, but maybe it depends how the seat is positioned.

No issue with sunroof on my 2004 V6 SE, so far.

I am planning to get a Toyota extended waranty before standard waranty gets expired. Too many electronic parts in this vehicle.

if your going from convert. to a car with no sunroof.. that's a big change.

No issues with leaking like the old cars... so... enjoy your sunroof!

I haven't had any sunroof rattles after having my 4R for 16 months. It was a bit noisy closing, but a little grease on the tracks fixed it. The only problem I've encountered is that the auto one-touch feature occasionally fails, requiring me to hold down on the slide/tilt button to manually open/close the sunroof one complete cycle before the auto feature resets itself and begin working again. This has happened to me about 4 times now. Anyone know if there's a TSB for it? Hopefully my sunroof won't die completely as some members have experienced. Fortunately for me, I have the extended warranty. I'd figure that repairing the sunroof alone would justify the added cost of an extended warranty. Just my 2 cents.

I am currently shopping for extended warranties. Any repair such as sunroof, brake master cylinder, ect would easily cost a small fortune.

No i use to have a convert, but then got my Tacoma in 96. Im going from the Tacoma to Hopefully a 4Runner :awais:

I'd have to say the worst engineered piece on my car is the sunroof. I've had 2 rattles, a stuck switch, a few auto-switch resets and some cracking/grinding noises with mine. The light sunshade also doesn't scream quality.

I've never had the sunroof actually fail on me though, and I do like having it. It's just that I'm scared to open it now since I'm out of warranty.
