Who is running 3rd gen 6 spoke rims?

Today I had these balanced again, at the Toyota dealership, with the road force machine, and the haweka adapter. All it accomplished was moving the location of my high speed vibration. Ive had these things balanced three times now, all three with the road force machine which as many of you know is much more pricey than a normal balance. Toyota said whoever did them last did a terrible job, which ironically was another Toyota service center in a different city. But they assured me they would be smooth now. Nope. The vibration used to be more so up front and in the steering wheel. Now the steering wheel is smooth and the vibration is coming from the rear, which makes sense cause I also had them rotate the tires. They told me the machine would tell them if it was a tire with a flaw, but they didnt say anything about any tires being bad.

So Im curous, how many of you are running these wheels, and how many of you have high speed vibration issues?

I'd bet that you have a defective tire(s). Out-of-round, poor uniformity, etc.

When I bought my 4Runner new, 14+ years ago, it came with those wheels, and those Goodyear Wrangler RT/S tires. Despite numerous attempts to balance them by the Dealer, they never succeeded. I got tired of dealing with their ineffective solution, and went and traded the tires in at a Discount Tire store, on some Michelin's.

Problem solved.

FWIW, I have never owned a Goodyear tire that impressed me. From truck tires, to high performance tires, all were disappointing. Usually for inability-to-balance issues. YMMV.

Thanks for the info. I have suspected the tires for a while now. So how does trading tires work? Do you just give them your old ones plus some cash for a new set? I didnt even know such a thing existed

I've done that many times over the years. Usually on new vehicles that came with tires I didn't like. Just go in and ask them what they would give you for them.

Tires I've traded (basically sold to the tire store for credit towards the tires I want) were in most cases new or nearly new. If they are old or significantly worn, they might not be willing to give you anything for them. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Im running those wheels and I had vibration in the front, then the rear when I rotated them. Come to find out my now back to tires are bad and im going to have to get two new ones.

I'm running those rims, and only had issues with Vibration when I was running my BFG All Terrains (1st set the truck had when I bought it). The tires had a broken belt.

I ran 6-spoke wheels for about 6 months & had no issues with balancing...I think you have a bad tire or bent wheel. As others have said, it's probably tire(s). If/when you get new tires, see if the tire store will spin each wheel on a balance machine without a tire mounted to see if any of them are bent, or how "unbalanced" the wheel itself is. (Just an idea...)

I have those rims and BFG 265/75/16 tires. I also have the 60-70mph vibration mystery. Somtimes it is worse than others. I can go months without a problem. I can't really point to any particualr cause other than these BFGs are just a heavy, hard to balance tire. Sometimes the vibration goes away after a balance sometimers it dosen't and then gets better a couple months later. For a while I thought it was the road. It is not the raod as the same road sometimes vibrates but then I notice somtimes it dosen't. I did the road force for at Discount Tire and also had the dealer road force balance. The results just don't make sence. Fortuneatly, I'm currently in a very light vibration phase. My best guess is... the combination of tight steering and heavy tires along with unusual balance needs (hawka adapter) are the problem. Just ride it out, see if it gets better in a couple months. The only consistant is that mine will either vibrate or not for months at a time. I think smaller (265/70/16) less aggressive tires are the real fix.

Use to have the same out of balance problem with the same wheels and BFG's on my 96 Taco. I had horrible vibrations when driving 60-70 mph on my last set of BFG's. Looking back it was probably the tires, since I had other BFG's and Pirelli's that weren't bad at all.

I have the same wheels on my 01 T4R SR5. Just bought 31/10.5/15 BFG's last weekend. No problems so far.

I've got those rims, best looking rims on a 4R IMO, and I've had vibrations at high speeds for years. I'm running Goodyear Wranglers.

Add me to the list! I've got a vibration at around 60 mph. I never had this problem when I ran 265/70's, it's been only since I've been running a 265/75 that I've had this issue. I'm thinking of going back to the 70 aspect ratio and possibly to Michelins with which I never had a problem.

If they road forced the tires

ask them how much force was needed to balance each wheel. usually ~15lbs~ or less is OK but anything over that warrants replacement.

Ive gone through the process when i had a out-of-round tire that when road forced balanced required some 29lbs of pressure to balance.
