Who makes the transfer cases in recent 5th Gen 4Runners? ...

I recently read/heard somewhere (no idea if true) that recent Tundras use the same transfer cases that Ford trucks use, from Borg Warner.

Got me wondering if 4Runner use the same transfer case, or something different? Or anything interesting or notable about them?

I'm pretty confident it's Aisin Seiki. They've manufactured the VF2A transfer case for Toyota (they're owned by Toyota so I'm not sure if that's "for toyota" or "for themselves"), but anyway they've manufactured it since around the mid 1980's. It's a very very old transfer case design. No need to change it. Works great. Has had continuous updates over its life.

Tundra switched in 2014 to a borgwarner produced transfer case.

A number of other trucks use Aisin Seiki (toyota) transmissions and transfer cases as well. The Ram HD trucks for example use Aisin automatic transmissions over the ZF or Allison options. They actually have an explanation on the RAM website somewhere about why the Aisin transmissions are better than the Allison and ZF options for heavy truck use.

Not odd at all. Tundras are assembled in the USA, so it makes sense to use a USA (or North American) transfer case (less shipping), while the 4Runners are assembled in Japan, again less shipping to use an Asian made transfer case.

My 2020 F150 has a Ford transfer case- the name is cast into the housing. No idea if Ford actually makes it or it is contracted out. It uses Mercon LV for lube.

My 1996 F350 has a BorgWarner transfer case. It uses Mercon for lube.
