I've read rumors that the U.S.-made version is made by Purolator.
I don't know who actually makes the filters made in Thailand or Japan, but they're visibly better than the U.S. version.

I wouldn't buy the U.S. version. Plus, I've found that dealers sell the Thai filter for less! The Japan version is the most expensive and therefore hardest to find.

The Thai filter is part # 90915-YZZD1 for the V6, or 90915-YZZD3 for the V8. The V8 filter is only a hair bigger than the V6 and it's got the same threads, so I think some members are using that one on the V6 as well.

that sounds good, because im changing my oil soon and i bought the Porulator Pure One. i dont know if others have other recommendations.

\edited for typo.

I ran a PureOne in my often raced '93 Eclipse for 8 years and it did the job and now I run one in my 4Runner. I've heard that they filter so well it does raise oil pressure a bit on some cars but mine has shown no ill effects.

The Thai filters are made by Denso, same for the Japanese ones. Ive never used a US made one. When I changed my oil for the first time I noticed that the Japanese filter was visibly at least better and more solidly constructed than the Thai one. I havent even seen a US one, nor do I want to after reading some things about them. OEM filters are actually pretty high quality most of the time. Toyota and Nissan I have alot of experience with and they are great, they turn in wonderful UOA's as well. I am going to hunt for a hookup on some Japanese filters for when I switch to Mobil 1!

WOW! One filter lasted you 8 years! You should write a letter and let Purolator document that.

I'm using Mobile 1 M1-209 filter on my 06 V6.

The M1 filter speced for this truck (don't remember the model) was quite a bit smaller than the factory Toyota filter. It turns out that the M1-209 filter has the same baseplate and bypass pressure rating, but an element that is half again as large. I purchased one of those and installed it. Its bigger than the Toyota filter, but there is plenty of room for it. In fact, there is an even larger Mobile 1 filter that has the same baseplate and bypass rating, but I figured it would be overkill.

The funny thing is, all three sizes are $9.95 at Autozone.

Check this link out on a Lexus forum for more of the rationale:
M1-209 Oil Filter

Of course it was just the brand and ran M1 synthetic through and changed it every 3500 miles (twice a season) and it ran a bit quicker than a Viper for the last 4 years I owned it and collected 400+ timeslips at the street and more than a few hard street runs. It had 117k on it (I bought it with 20k) and still ran very low 13s (5800ft asl) when I sold it and I never opened the engine except for a valve cover gasket replacement.

Why would I go with anything else after the abuse theo PureOnes took during 60k very modded miles? Of course with the Runner I go about 9k between changes since it's not turboed or driven as hard.

Running The V-8 Filter on a V-6 Here!

I am Running the part number toto mentioned on my V-6. (90915-YZZD3) The one made in Thailand. Been running it for about 5 oil changes now. You can pick up a case on ebay for around $36-40 shipped.

I recently started using Blackstone labs for my UOA. (2 reports now with no problems) 5100 miles on the first sample at 50k miles and just under 6 k miles on the next at approx. 56k. Going for 6500 on the next change and sample. Mobil 1 truck and suv.

I like the OEM filter. Hell it is cheaper and better than alot of the aftermarket filters.

Lord only knows what I have. I bought some from Autopartswarehouse.com thinking I was getting the OEM Toyota filters. What I got was Nippon "OEM No. 90915-YZZD3" made in Malaysia. These are not the same as the filter I got from my Toyota dealer. Externally the construction looks identical, but after cutting one open I found the bypass valve and the filtering element to be different. I'm not sure if one is better than the other, all I know is that they're not the same...

More info can be found here on different filters. I use the 90915-YZZD3 on both the 4Runner and my Taco. It's the V8 filter and the equivalent is the 90915-20004 for the Japan made Denso. The 20004 is one of the best filters available.

Both stealers I've used for previous oil changes were using the -YZZD3 on my V6. That's also what they sell me now that I do it myself (since switching to M1 oil.) Maybe that's all they stock to keep their inventory simple.

1st OC by dealership then i DIY, heres what i found.

i dont know if they - stealership, were just tossing dice but i have a hard time taking off my oil filter today, it was so tight, i thought its supposed to be hand tight, am i right? secondly, the drian plug is sooo (you bet, it is tight again) i highly doubt if they even use torque wrench to tight the plugs or yet common sense when plugging drain hole.
and before i drain, i check oil level and is more than full, idk if its a bad thing.

im glad i did it myself, my first time in 4runner, even if its not clocked to be oil changed. synthetic in, dino gone.

When I took the original one off it was really on there! I seem to remember seeing somewhere that when using a oil filter socket you screw it on hand tight, then turn it 3/4 turn with the wrench. Ill look around to see where I saw that. Maybe on the oil filter box? Mobil 1 goes in in another 1K mi!

I always put my oil filters on hand tight, But I can not always get them off by hand after they have been on there for 5000 miles+ even thou I was the one that put it on. I don't think that is uncommon. As for the drain plug. I don't use a torque wrench and I doubt if the dealership does either when they put it back in. I just choke up on a 3/8 inch drive socket wrench and snug it up.

i thought 3/4-1 turn as soon as the rubber gasket touches the metal base (i dont how how exactly to call it).

I agree. I was taught to hand-tighten the filter - never use a wrench on it to put it on. Even when you hand-tighten you still need a wrench to get it off.

Could be that you turn 3/4 turn after the rubber meets metal. Ill look it up in the manual. I torque the drain plug to 30ft lb. Im sure the service manual states what the tq values are. Anyone have a copy?

Here's how Toyota tells you to change the oil and filter. From the 2006 V8 Service Manual.
They do tighten the filter with a wrench 3/4 turn. No wonder the factory filter is always a total hassle to take off!! It also tells you to remove the skid plate ("engine under cover sub-assy # 1") and get the filter out from underneath. That was an issue in another thread - dealers pull it off from above to save time, even on the V8 where it's on the bottom of the engine.
