Could be that you turn 3/4 turn after the rubber meets metal. Ill look it up in the manual. I torque the drain plug to 30ft lb. Im sure the service manual states what the tq values are. Anyone have a copy?

i was at bitog, there's one same usename as yours.

to the topic, the pure one i used is smaller in length than toyota oil filter, i hand tight it. we'll see how it goes the next time i change it.

Yea, thats me I get around! Im really itching to see how my engine is going to wear. Probably stick with OEM filters + M1 for the duration. Gotta love the top mount filter!

that top mount spills about (estimate) 2oz of used oil when i changed it.

same here, the pure one filter has some good reputation, filters very well, so well that it becomes restrictive as i've read on a site where they disected filters and see what it is made of.

When I took the original one off it was really on there! I seem to remember seeing somewhere that when using a oil filter socket you screw it on hand tight, then turn it 3/4 turn with the wrench. Ill look around to see where I saw that. Maybe on the oil filter box? Mobil 1 goes in in another 1K mi!

It tells you right on the filter. 3/4 turn (with or without wrench) after the gasket makes contact.

I always hand tighten the filter as much as I can by hand. Usually it ends up about 3/4 turn after the gasket makes contact. I've tried on another car once and was able to get the filter off by hand, but it's a heck of a lot harder than installing it. Not worth the effort scraping forearms or busting knuckles, easy using a crush filter remover.

The best thing about the top mount is Toyota figured it all out and including a catch and spout for runoff oil. I was fairly impressed that they made a catch on my Camry (not impressed with the 45 degree downward slant the filter mounted though), which channels oil away from the block and down into a hole on the splash shield underneath.

The Thai filter is part # 90915-YZZD1 for the V6, or 90915-YZZD3 for the V8. The V8 filter is only a hair bigger than the V6 and it's got the same threads, so I think some members are using that one on the V6 as well.

The parts manager who helped me said that the 06 V6 uses a different filter than the 03-05 V6. The 06 V6 oil filters that he sold me are the YZZD3 which are rated for the V8s. He then sold me the YZZD1 for my father's 04 V6 4runner and 96 tacoma. I find it weird that toyota changed the oil filters for the 06 V6 from the previous years; especially since there was no changes in the engine from the previous years. Skeptical, I contacted another dealership parts department and they said it was the correct part number for the 06.

So 2003 -2004 V6 uses YZZD1 oil filters. 2003-2004 V8 uses YZZD3 oil filters. 2006 on up V6 uses YZZD3, so what does the V8 use?

That's by the book. You can just use the D3 on any 4th Gen.

There hasn't been any changes on the engine for '06 other than a different SAE testing method for HP and torque. The D3 is suppose to be a V8 filter and it's about an inch taller than the D1 V6 filter. But all else between the D1 and D3 are the same. It's a matter of clearance issues for the D3. I was told I can use the D3 on my Camry's 3.3 V6.

You can use the D3 on your dad's '04 V6, I'm using them on my '05 Taco. I don't know about the 3.4 V6 on the Tacoma though.

Thats funny, Ive always gotten the D3 from the stealership. Never asked for more than a "2006 V6 4R" filter. Im not complaining though, maybe Ive been paying less for them?
