Who painted fenders/bumpers? Rustoleum bedliner or undercoating?

I'm a little confused what people have used here. I see there are 3 types of rustoleum

- undercoating
- professional undercoating
- bedliner

in a few of the build threads i've gotten confused whether people use the undercoating or the bedliner spray?

i want my 'sun bleached' black fenders, bumpers and rear spoiler to look as closely to original as possible.

is the 'rustoleum' ultra-cover flat black what you spray over this?

do you do the sidesteps, bumpers, front fender and wheel fenders all with the same paint?

thanks! i don't want to screw them up and i'm not going for anything 'bling', just want to propely restore them (if possible)

I used Dupli-Color Bed Armor in the can. They also offer a roll on kit, but I felt I was better with a nozzle.

I have chrome bumpers, so I left those untouched, but I did my fenders and mudguards a couple months ago and they turned out great.

I used a pretty simple process:

1) Removed / washed / dried each piece
2) Light scuffing with steel wool (600)
3) Sprayed on adhesion promoter - 2 coats - followed instructions on the can
4) Sprayed on Bed Armor - 4 coats - followed instructions on the can

It's been holding up pretty well and I couldn't be happier.

I also did the rear spoiler and roof rack with Rustoleum Bedliner and that's holding up well.

Only differences between the two: Dupli-color is much "goopier" and even comes out in chunks a bit (yes, I shook the can for a solid two minutes) and the Rustoleum was more of a true aerosol.

I'm happy I used what I did, where I did, since the fenders now have more of a true bedliner look, whereas the spoiler and roof rack are just 'textured'.

I used it on my rockers and it came out great. Tough as nails too. Its a two part mix but very easy to apply with a roller.

thanks! i meant to point out i also have chrome bumpers and i'm leaving those alone..just redoing the 'black' parts (front, 4 side fender flares, sidestep, rear step) and the spoiler.

so no dupli-color on the spoiler? its probably the only thing i'm planning to remove to paint..the rest i'm going to mask off.

that looks pretty good..but also pretty steep at $140 for a gallon. i don't want to be 'cheap' but this is a 15 year old vehicle with almost 300,000 miles on it so i'm thinking the duplicolor option might be a better way to go.

Mine is a Sport, so the fender flares are color matched. But I've used it on Volvo and GMC Sierra flares and it worked great.

OK - here is something even cheaper. Get a heat gun. Wash the parts that you will be restoring, then go over the area with the heat gun until it looks shiny . Keep the heat moving, etc.

You half expect it to go back to the flat look as it cools, but it doesn't.

Seems to hold up - still looked pretty black, six months after I did it. I expect I'll have to redo it soon, but it is essentially free (and only takes 20-30 minutes) so who cares.

i do own a heat gun..but this makes me a little nervous. that thing gets HOT..i'm afraid i'd end up melting part of my plastic.

plus you cant use that on the metal parts like the rear spoiler and parts of the roof rack right?

I used Dupli-color surface cleaner then sprayed a good solid coat of adhesion promotor then sprayed 3 coats of Duplicolor Trim paint

We just picked up a White 98 Limited with 112K on the odo last night and unfortunately it has the light metallic blue painted flares that are starting to peel. I would like to do them flat or satin black but may try the strip with heat first. Any suggestions for the best place online to buy the retention clips would be greatly appreciated.

I did Line X on my rockers and flares, color matched. I Por -15 any rust on the under carriage, then had Line X undercoat everything. Not cheap, but not awful either ( $ 1000.00 ). I think it came out pretty good.

For me - taking them off was a no brainer. It's a 20 minute per side with non-electric hand tools. You could use Dupli-color on the spoiler, but I just wanted to see the difference between the two and didn't want to to one set of fenders with one and one with the other.

ron maiden's look amazing..but i'm so lazy that the dye process seems like i could do everyrhing at the same time in well under an hour and they'd be dry an hour later..no removal necessary..just a little masking off and rubbing on the dye.

I wanted to give mine a "tough" look and they have held up real well. I used Hurculiner on the fender flares and rockers. I love it. Very strong and easier to clean then I thought.

Here it is several months after I put it on.

This is the day I applied it.

Man I can't tell that they are sprayed with Line X. You have a closer shot? Hurculiner only cost me $80 and it did my fender flares, rockers, and my brothers Ram.

We still had some left over too!

i'm really looking forward to trying the dye. it should be here today.

i just realized i can hit the weathertech inserts as well! they used to be black but never seem to come clean these days. they look good w/ armorall but OMG they are buttery slippery mess when i do that plus they attract dirt.

dye is the way to go! super pumped.

damaged quarter

I got in a car accident, and the damage leftover has made me decide to go with the bedliner to cover the primer and make it easier to apply than actually painting it. The bedliner will also provide protection from all the pokey plants out here in the desert while I am exploring the outdoors.

I am going to color match the bedliner to my original paint color, and follow the fender lines to make it look some what original.
