Ugh lol, I just don't know how often I'm going to be able to join you guys with the current stock height/tires and running boards :redbrick:
I don't run the BOSS kit, but the one just a step below. They've recently changed the BOSS kit to include a Toytec branded shocks in the front and rear. They claim the shock in the BOSS kit is fully rebuildable, so you should plan on that needing to be done at around 50K miles depending on how hard you run them... They also don't state who actually makes their shocks, so I can't say anything on the reliability. It is Toytec though and they are pretty good about standing behind their products.
The Ultimate kit that I have uses standard Bilstein 5100s for both front and rear. These are lifetime components that can't be rebuilt but are warranted for the life of the product by Bilstein. Like the BOSS kit, the Ultimate is fully adjustable so you can deal with the "Toyota Lean" by adjusting the driver side coil-over slightly higher than the passenger. The adjustable spring perch is what sets this one apart from the basic Bilstein lift that only has a series of 5 circlip stops for adjusting the height of the lift. In reality, if you're not going to really wheel the hell out of your 4Runner, you're just wasting money on top o'the line products that have a much more rigorous maintenance cycle.
I wouldn't really worry much about a lift and running boards... the running boards can be removed quite easily. Just need a 12mm ratchet with an extender and around 20 minutes to remove the bolts. Viola'! No more running boards. Removing them was actually the very first "mod" that I made to my runner. And I've been all over the place in mine with this crew before I even put the lift on. Ran Devil's staircase up at Broken Arrow and everything. So, don't worry too much about being stock. We've all been there and we're not going to run you through anything that your truck can't make. Your own personal butt pucker will limit you much more than the capabilities of your stock truck will...

Lots of people run the Toytec and I saw that you can now get a true coilover like the King, ICON, SwayAway, Radflo shock with the BOSS. Just keep in mind if you are planing on buying a coilover for primarily a mall crawler that comes with certainly high level of lameness. "DUDE, Look at my cement curb articulation"
It really sounds like you want descent offroad-ability and good road manners. To me that says Bilstein.
My vote for you would be the Ultimate, a good solid Bilstein front shock and I believe a BOSS shock in the rear if its anything like the 3rd gen kit, otherwise another nice set of Bilstein.
Besides later down the road if you are at that point where you need to get more extreme you will make a descent return on used suspension equipment. Doesn't seem to be up for all too long on the forum, trust me...been trying to score some Land Cruiser rear coils for a while and keep missing the feeding frenzy.
And damn... As always you guys kick ass, the feedback is invaluable as I continue to wrap my head around this new rig.
Ohh and yea AZBub lol, I can assure you I'm not trying to Mall crawl, agreed on level of lameness haha.. Maybe newb/chump level stuff, but I've even ALREADY taken the 4runner off pavement twice since I've had it which is barely a month! :whoo: I love it. I cruised up north from lake pleasant a little bit on castle hot springs, and then did the little trail to devils bridge in Sedona. I'm sure to you guys both of those are considered "Cute" at best haha, but I still loved not being on pavement.
Those look like pretty tame trails to me. I would have run those with my saggy stock suspension and my running boards on. I say you join up with us next Sunday for some fun, besides its a really good chance to see in person what works, how it works etc. You will also be with some folks who really know what they are doing off road and will help you on your driving (Im excluding myself from the list though cause Im still learning....
The first off roading my wife and I did was up and over 4 peaks and we thought that was "intense" cause I had to use 4Lo once...I think that was May this year. All I can say is its addicting cause of the building of your vehicle but also the people you meet, the things you see and the challenges you put yourself up to.
lol, Ohh I'm all for being away from the paved roads of redundant normalcy haha.... Getting away for an afternoon here and there... So refreshing.
So on that note... would anyone call me crazy or have suggestions in regards to what it would take to finish off a lift build for me if I where to consider doing:
The Bilstein 6112's up front and the 5160's in the back?
.
I'm thinking of doing these or 5100s all around with 2" springs in the rear, then 285s.
Also, I might be in for the 16th as well. I'm bone stock though, am I going to have any trouble on the trail you guys are doing?
What time is everyone meeting up?
Tested out 1 10" section of my lightbar so far in the end it will be 30" total at about 600 watts, 72000 lumens. my 55w hid high beams on the top, led bar on the bottom. cant wait for a night run.
