Why 20 inch tires on Ltd?

A wider tire would definitely help, but even better would be to install wheel spacers to bring the wheel out more towards the edge of the body. Or install aftermarket wheels with a more aggressive offset.
I disagree with the spacer comment...I wouldn't want my rig looking like a ghetto cutlass with skinny ass wheels hanging out of the fenders. The 245's are too skinny, bottom line. The stock 20's are very sharp in my opinion, easiest thing is just to throw on a wider tire. :cowboy:
The skinny tires are lame for sure, but spacers will bring them out to the edge of the body. That wouldn't look ghetto, it would look good.
Yeah, as long as you didn't go too far. My 275's reach out to the edge of the body with the factory wheels.
With or without spacers? I'm guessing you mean with spacers, since 275's are only 30mm wider than the stock 245's. And half of that (15mm) would be on the inside. So you only increase about 15mm from the tire (not the wheel) when you go with 275 tires on the stock wheels without also adding wheel spacers.
Someone on here has a picture of either 275 or 285 tires on the OEM wheels with wheel spacers and I thought it looked close to flush with the fenders. Either way, it definitely makes for a much nicer stance, IMO.
No without. I don't have spacers. The tires are almost flush with the factory running boards and half way up the wheel wells. The top of the tires are not flush with the top of the wheel wells (that would be too much IMO).

The pics don't really do the change justice, it really looks much better in person. Even though the Hankooks are listed as 275 tread width, the actual tire width may be a little wider with the broad shoulder and added graphics on the sidewall.

Thanks for the pics. Looks good to me. Just to be clear, you put the 275/55/20s on the factory wheel? No issues with tire pressure monitor lighting up or anything like that?
And for anyone willing to chime in, do you really believe the 20" wheels are going to perform that differently off road than the 17" wheels on the SR5. I doubt that 95% of us will notice the difference.

Sidewall depth makes a big diff in off roading and with 20" wheels you are much more likely to suffer rim rash and I think Toyotas knows that most Limited drivers will never venture past a dirt road and those who are likely to with buy an SR5 or TE model. Tires having adequate sidewall is key for off roading especially if you air down a bit.
True...I don't plan on anything more than a moderately rocky dirt road. No rock crawling or trails here...
The 20's I think, first and foremost are for looks. Secondary to that, the smaller sidewall should enhance on road handling slightly which compliments the XREAS system.
My main reasons for the wider tires are 1) Looks 2) Functionality of a wider tire with respect to handling 3) Better tire for light off-roading and mud/snow.
That is correct. Discount Tire lists them as a +0 size - not really sure what that means, other than that they will fit without rubbing.
20 inch wheels on the Limited
Well after 250,000 miles and 13 years of driving it, my 2005 SR5 finally succumbed to its fate...hit a deer on the highway which destroyed all of the body work on the front of the truck. The 4Runner is still completely drivable, but the insurance company totaled it due to the cost of the body work.
So, I am buying a new Limited, but really perplexed about the weird 20 inch wheels that they put on it. I am buying snow tires and a second set of wheels since I live in the Northeast. I found that I can use 18 inch wheels with 265/65/18 tires and get the same wheel/tire height as the 20 inch wheels/tires, but give myself many more options on tires to purchase in that size. I may just leave the 18 inch wheels on permanently and sell the 20 inch wheels that came on the Limited.

This is interesting to see a 7 year old thread on 20 inch wheels poke its head up. The physics of larger sidewalls has not changed, but it appears that the perception of the larger wheels is in a different place now than it was in 2011. Or maybe not...interesting to me all the same. :fishing:
