Why are the V1 5th Gen Trails so rare?

Because everyone's too busy enjoying driving/modding them to sell them! Haha
In all seriousness, I don't have any idea how many they made back then, but they apparently made and sold enough of them that they realized there was a market, hence why they're more plentiful now and have been revised.
Also, there's one for sale on Craigslist here locally in Tulsa if you were looking for one! Red with 66k miles on it, looks like a nice build!

Agreed, 2010-13 trails are by far the best looking 5th gens in my opinion. They are hard to find, I think the earlier 5th gens didn't sell as well all around.

The early 5th gen sales numbers were pretty low. 2010-2012 I though the 5th gen 4runner was a new body style of Sequoia, then I saw a TE and had to have one. Early 2012 the Tsunami made the already low volume TEs hard to find and I had to travel over a thousand miles to get mine.

This thread has kept the data for each month of the 5th gen sales, as well as previous gens.
At the current rate, they will sell more 4runners in 2018 than they did in 2010, 2011, and 2012 combined.

I also think only about 4%, or 2,000 units were Trails for the first several years of the 5th Gen. I'm never selling mine.
I was looking for a 2012/2013 Trail prior to buying my 2018 TRDORP.
Over the 3 months or so that I was looking seriously, with intent to buy, in the entire Northeast corridor there were three-- yes, three-- 2012/2013 Trails with under 100k miles for sale through dealers: two Salsa reds and one Shoreline Blue.
Unfortunately the blue one was sold out from under me, but at least another forum member scooped it up.
Pickings are slim with the early Trails and for good reason. Still the best looking 4Runner ever in my opinion. I'm under the impression that these were/are "buy and keep" vehicles for many owners, both original and secondary.

The recession and recovery weren't friendly to vehicle sales, and were even less friendly to higher-trim vehicles.

Quite a few comments about the early 5th Gen looking different. I'm new to the breed, and don't really see much difference between that and my 2018. What is different?

Picked up my 2013 in August with 50K on it, which is less than my Z and she sat in the garage the first two years. I was in the market for an OR and/or an OFP until I found the early Trails. I like the rarity of them becausev ere in SoCal, you see a late 5th gen every 5 miles. The average Joe has no idea these are the same as the current 4runners so I get asked a lot what year is mine.

I love mine but the newer front ends (mainly the headlights) are starting to grow on me... but this was a buy and keep forever vehicle.

When I bought mine in February, 2012, there were a total of 3 in the entire Gulf States Region. Very hard to find at the time. When I started searching dealer inventory on-line the same 3 kept showing up, regardless of which dealer I searched. I got lucky that there was one in the DFW metroplex. I rolled into the dealer as they were literally rolling it out on display. I had to act quick as there were several other buyers right behind me.
I agree that the look of the '10-'13 TE is the best. Toyota lost their way when the stopped the blacked out trim and rack of these models.
