I watched the market for about a year and a half. By chance a black 1 owner car without any accidents popped up near me, 2013 with 71k miles. Ended up getting it but at a whopping 27k even (was listed around 29k). They hold their value. This was in February I want to say that I got it and it doesnt seem the market moved much since then.
Why are the V1 5th Gen Trails so rare?

Partly that, but not entirely. The T4R is actually gaining in popularity, too, perhaps because there's little direct competition.

I was looking for a 2013 TE in silver last year. One day, a silver one popped up at the local dealer I like. Before there were even many details up online about it I called and arranged to see it. They also had a black 2012 TE with 48k non CPO, I think they were asking 29k for that one.
The silver was a one owner from Phoenix, 24k miles, CPO and as close to new condition as new almost. I bought it up. I paid 35k for it, but it was worth every penny to me since I wouldn't have ever bought a face-lifted 14+ for any reason. I like the 10-13.
I also like that it's trim level isn't badged all over it, and it's got the best of both worlds between the TRDOR and the TRDORP. A sunroof and the water resistant cloth seats. Mine has no nav, just the old school small orange screen and KDSS.
The perfect 5th gen 4runner.
Since I bought it in last July, I've put 18k miles on it. And I don't ever plan on selling it.

That Shoreline Blue is a great color 
I had been debating building up my 3rd gen, the moment I saw a pic of the 5.5 refresh hit the interwebz, Sept of '13, I shot out and bought mine. They had one other Salsa Red and two silver left on the lot at this particular dealer, there were at least a half dozen more on the south end of the valley.
5th gen is growing on me a bit, I still couldn't deal with that fk'd up gash of a the 5.5 front end, I kinda think this gen is fugly enough. 3rd gen looks for the win... still :biggrin1:

Yes, they are very rare… (not sure why)... it took me almost two years to find my 2013 Trail; IMHO: 2010-13 Trail is best looking and most utilitarian 5th gen 4runner..... and arguably best looking 4Runner period.
If 2010-2013 trail did not exist, I would be still driving my 4th gen and hoping that 6th gen would be better… 2014+ SR5 definitely looks better than 5th gen SR5 prior to that… but I still cannot force myself to like the front end of it…
I think in years to come those 2010-2013 trails will become “unicorns” (if they not already)… like 1st gen with turbo are…

That may have had a small part, the larger picture was the economy tanked, the US was literally in a large depression, you can see the direct correlation in sales numbers starting in 2007.

Conversion!
I really wanted an early 5th gen Trail, but needed the 3rd row seat. So, I bought an SR5. It's my favorite vehicle ever. I still like the higher and tighter styling and better approach/departure of the early Trails, so I'm going to do the conversion. Front and rear bumpers, rockers, trim, and headlights. The one thing I won't be putting on it is a hood with a non-functional scoop.

not sure when u were in the market. I recently bought a 2015 SR5 but was looking hard for an early model trail. There was one up in NH (new england here also) that i drove up to look at and it was 70k miles 1 owner very clean and it sold the next day i called back. the only other trail i've seen around is one also up in NH with 150k miles salsa red listed 14k lol.

I liked them when they came out but I was still fighting my Jeep kick back then and rolled into a Trails Team FJC instead. I see them on the streets from time to time but they certainly aren't as common as the current Trail/TRDOR/PRO of the 5.2 5th Gens. One recently came through my local dealer in Shoreline Blue, no sunroof and 90K on the ODO, super clean 4Runner, I think it sold for $21K.
I hope that people continue to scoop these up and build them out because it is definitely the most utilitarian looking 4Runner. While I still think that the 3rd Gen was the best looking 4Runner ever built, I like the current 5.2 5th Gen (2014+) over the 5.1 models ('10-13), the TE included. The headlights are the deal breaker IMHO, but the TE gets a pass for what it is.

It's been in an accident with multiple airbag deployments, probably why they put new bumpers on and such lol
