Why black out the chrome?

I have been seeing this all over the forum where 4runner owners are blacking out their chrome, even on the new ones. Now for sure this is for personal preference and style that you are trying to achieve, but chrome is supposed to *pop*, be flashy and to accent the beauty of a car. I personally love chrome; every time I wash my 4runner I take the time to polish the chrome bumpers and trim.

I am not trying to hate I guess I am just trying to understand the reasoning. Is chrome too old school? Is the point to make the car all black including the wheels(chrome wheels always hurt my eyes) and windows? Kinda like Batman or Darth Vader?

Let me now your opinions about chrome and I will see if I can get some pictures of my "flashy" chrome but first I gotta wash the mud off :heh:

Seriously tho, on the older stuff it looks great. But then it was real steel, not this plastic crap. I spent many hours polishing the chrome on my old Chevys and Fords. Can't say that I miss it... :rip:

I think it really depends on the direction of the truck.

More outdoorsy trucks seem odd to me with chrome... personally I chose to remove the chrome from my 3rd gen. With the plate bumpers being black, chrome would look out of place on the grille. I guess it's cheap looking to me. Then you see the 3rd gens with the color matched everything... can't ignore how good that looks (in my opinion).

My 1st gen has chrome, only factory chrome. Nothing more. I like it the way it is, it even pulls off the white lettering on the tires. The classic look takes the cake with chrome, otherwise it really just seems tacky (to me) on newer cars.

Chrome wheels make me want to puke unless they're originals on a classic car.

Chrome is old school. Looks good on old muscle cars and pre 72 trucks American trucks though.

My 1st gen has chrome, only factory chrome. The classic look takes the cake with chrome, otherwise it really just seems tacky (to me) on newer cars. Chrome wheels make me want to puke unless they're originals on a classic car.

Factory chrome on classics is tasteful. Like the chrome latches on the first-gen window; Chrome is THE only proper finish for that.

Generally, in my book functional chrome is good. Non-functional ones like the wheel well trim that catches and retains dirt and worst yet salt water, and hasten rust come off my truck. (Altho those really felt like stainless-steel, not chrome plated)

I paid, in 1991, $500 for the "chrome package" as its called on the bill of sale, and I really got it for looks cause it does look good, in my opinion, and I guess I just like it for when my truck is clean. If ya got it make it look good right?

Started driving and purchasing cars in the mid-1970s, and ALWAYS hated chrome and badges. I try and have all chrome painted ASAP after getting a new vehicle. Here's my de-chromed/de-badged 5th Gen.....

I like my crome! It shows it is made of metal. So I spend 1/2 hour twice a year when I wax the paint to polish up the crome. No big deal. It sure looks good to me!

UPDATE: I replaced my front bumper with an aftermarket. The crome was thin and pitted. The new one is nice and shiny, and should last the life of the truck.

I think small amounts of chrome on certain vehicles looks good.

But I've seen some 5th gens driving around, where it looks like they went overboard on the chrome. On the grill, around the bumper, chrome inserts in the bumper, it's just too much and at least to me, makes me hate the front ends of the 5th gens even more.

Yeah, that looks better. You should tape over your gauges too, they look hideous! I think Ford offers everything blacked out, you should get one of those.

Thanks, yeah I plastidipped the guages this past weekend and put the taillight paint on the cover. Looks much better.
Which Ford, the raptor? Yeah I like it but the mileage is horrible on those. My bud had one and it's a beast. Such a fun truck.
