Why black out the chrome?

i go against the grain... de-badged my tacomas back home and left minimal factory chrome (bumpers, mirrors, grill) that kinda crap. with my runner, i want to tint my chrome, not completely black it out. sorta like "ooh, its shiny, but not too shiny." na'm sayin'?

Kinda like black chrome? My friend has black chrome wheels on his CTS-V and it looks great. You'll have to post pics of your tinted chrome.

I just have never been a fan of chrome. I scuffed up the chrome T emblems and painted the center caps. I think it's just personal preference.

Seriously tho, on the older stuff it looks great. But then it was real steel, not this plastic crap. I spent many hours polishing the chrome on my old Chevys and Fords. Can't say that I miss it... :rip:

Agree, agree, and agree! I love the chrome on my car. It is real chrome though! I have gotten rid of most the chrome on my runner though. Not really by choice, just from upgrading bumpers and such. I do still have chrome door handles and a grill though.

I despise chrome so much I had to cover up the Toyota emblem on the steering wheel until I can black it out.

Haha that's awesome. Let us know how you go about doing it. My FJ has the same look on the steering wheel and I hate it. Planning on doing Plasti dip on the exterior emblems.

I just prefer the black out look. Only a fan of chrome on classic cars.

I think chrome looks great in moderation, just like anything else. When people black out the Toyota emblem on the front of 4Runner, I think it looks a bit odd, and as though something is missing. The chrome logos and badges give a nice focal point. I love the chrome 4Runner logo against the black rear trim on the trail edition. It looks classy and badass all at the same time. There is no way I'm taking a can of spray paint to my vehicle.

Yeah I have never been much of a chrome fan unless it's on a classic car or Harley. I also think my silver 4 looks cleaner with no chrome on it.

I've never liked heavy chrome on newer model vehicles. One of the first things I do is plati-dip anything chrome. I love it on cars from the 50s & 60s though.

I have been seeing this all over the forum where 4runner owners are blacking out their chrome, even on the new ones. Now for sure this is for personal preference and style that you are trying to achieve, but chrome is supposed to *pop*, be flashy and to accent the beauty of a car. I personally love chrome; every time I wash my 4runner I take the time to polish the chrome bumpers and trim.

I am not trying to hate I guess I am just trying to understand the reasoning. Is chrome too old school? Is the point to make the car all black including the wheels(chrome wheels always hurt my eyes) and windows? Kinda like Batman or Darth Vader?

Let me now your opinions about chrome and I will see if I can get some pictures of my "flashy" chrome but first I gotta wash the mud off :heh:

I'm with you. I like some chrome. The T4R Limited chrome does not bother me at all, and I can't see going to a lot of effort to get rid of it or cover it up. But to each his own; I personally disliked the Limited wheels, so that was my first mod - on day 2 no less. Got rid of them and now I like the look much better. Everybody gets to decide what works...for them. But I was glad to see your post - because I'm kind of mystified about the chrome things as well.

I'm with you on that, when we got our 2017 SR5 it was going to be the wifes dd, and she wanted the black TRD wheels, and keep it stock other than that. Then she said she wanted to keep driving her Mini S, and the runner was for me to drive so.
