Why do so many exhaust manufacturers say ONLY v6 or ONLY early years?

I've been looking at exhausts. On many of the websites I see conflicting information. For example I've seen on this site that magnaflow will fit the v6 and v8 for all 4th gens. But on the magnaflow website it only has an option for v6. Same with TRD. Can anyone confirm if the magnaflow exhaust system will fit an 08 limited v8 with xreas?

I can't confirm the xreas thing, but I was told by Borla that their exhaust, which claims (on the borla website) to only work with 05+ v8 models, will work with all 03-09 v6 & v8s and that the application list just wasn't properly updated.

it's wierd that that problem would apply through different brands and even different vendors web sites.

I thought it was weird too, the borla guy even claimed that the exhaust system was "tuned for the v6 & the v8".

Seems to me like 2 different motors would require 2 different systems to truly be "tuned" to each motor.

This would be nice but I feel it is not realistic. Anyone would be hard pressed to find a exhaust sytem that "claims" it is tuned for a specific motor. Mufflers, in general, are universal (in terms of purpose). The biggest factor is inlet/outlet size of the muffler (and actual piping size). Other contributing factors would be mandrel bent vs conventional muffler shop bends

Most borla (and magnaflow) exhaust systems claim to use mufflers tuned specifically for their application. The borla salesman told me that the muffler included in the 4runner borla exhaust kit was tuned specifically for the 4runner and different from the standard borla mufflers available.

They also make the same systems with (what borla claims are) "tuned" mufflers for a lot of motors and applications. My point was that I don't understand how it can be tuned for a v6 and a v8.

I'm not saying they actually are tuned, but they definitely do "claim" they are.

The muffler will work fine as long as it's the right size. It's still a universal muffler with some tubing that is routed where the stock tubing was. I had a Borla kit on my 944... and it was a Borla XR-1 with stainless tubing "tuned for the car"... but it was a borla universal XR-1 muffler. I have a magnaflow on my MR2 right now. It's a truck muffler (27" long by 6" round), but gets about what any other MR2 with my engine does on the dyno. Usually the muffler is not the big restriction in the system as long as it's a straight-through aftermarket muffler. (yes, I know about backpressure and exhaust velocity and all that, but that's another conversation)
