Downgrades compared to the 4th gen.

There's only one thing I hate about my 4th gen:
The 4th gen climate control system has a mind of its own. I've seen inconsistent behavior where pushing a certain button does not always result in the same action. Sometimes when it's not in auto mode, switching it to defrost will increase the fan speed, but sometimes it won't. I think it was designed by an intern or something.

I accidentally hit auto when trying to adjust the temperature the other day, and it changed literally everything except the temperature. I had it on low fan, face vents, fresh air, and no A/C. Auto increased the fan, put it on floor vents or defrost (can't remember), and turned on the A/C and recirc. I had to take my eyes off the road several times to put everything back.

It has the most frustrating control logic ever. In Colorado we have great cool, dry, clean air most of the time, and I want to breathe that not the stale air in the car. I rarely have to use A/C, at least in the mountains. It recirculates when I want fresh air most, like if the car is hot and has been sitting in the sun, or if I turn the temperature colder because I don't want any heat on a cool morning. Most of the time it only turns itself on at startup, but sometimes while driving it decides that the outside air is too fresh, so it must suddenly make it hot and stuffy inside. Sometimes it goes on when I have the windows down. It's by far the stupidest feature of this vehicle, and possibly the only thing I don't like about it.

Hopefully they fixed that in the 5th gen.
 
I take the good with the bad....its a real truck, not a boxy vehicle built on a car chassis. I hate the orange radio...impossible to see during the day with lights on (WIPERS ON, LIGHTS ON here in NJ). I rather have comfortable seats than heated leather! Oh...I nearly forgot....MUSHY BRAKES!
 
My is not a new shiny GX460... Not a land cruiser... has 20" rims that are too narrow to fit any decent tire on.
 
The more I think about it the more it sorta piss me off Toyota can't squeeze more power out of this 4.0L. Especially on the Pro.

Almost bought the GX, but just could not get past the front end and side opening hatch. Beautiful truck though. Also not crazy about the skinny rims on my limited but will upgrade those when tires are needed.
 
More POWERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR and a front locker on the pro.

Oh, and rear tire on a rear tire carrier instead of dragging on the ground.
 
More power? The power is just fine...the 4runner can maintain highway speeds just fine at a relatively low RPM. What this truck needs is more torque. Where is the option for that on the poll?

My griping aside, this truck has impressed me so far.

Move out west in the mountains and you may change your mind. I just finished 3 trips in the mountains over 6000 miles. If you call climbing hills with the rpm at 4500-5000 for long distances on steep grades low rpm then you think different than me. Low rpm torque is lacking big time as you state. The thing is pretty much a dog at high altitudes and higher highway speeds with any kind of steep grade. Throw in a head wind and it is not fun. More gears would help to narrow the gap between the gears. Sometimes one gear is to high but the next lower gear is to low. Sometimes I take the cruise off so that is does not keep trying to downshift into 3rd and avoid the very high rpm. I just give up, slow down and let the other cars pass. Even my wife who does not care about cars at all comments on how slow this thing is compared to other cars we have owned.

I really don't drive at high altitudes much, but I have gone up and down plenty of steep grades and mountain sides...trust me I know that this thing runs slowly in those types of situations.

My only point was torque is somewhat more important to me than horsepower when it comes to robust trucks like these (and yes I know the 2 are related). I'd rather have more pulling power, grunt off the line than a higher top speed. As it is, the 4runner's 270HP is more than adequate for getting up to 80mph on a flat open highway.

All that being said, I certainly wouldn't be complaining if this truck had come with 20-30 more HP.

Bimrunner has it! I haven't had a compliment in the past decade and my 4Runner has had about 40 in the past 3 years
