Why do you hate your 4Runner?

I hate my 4Runner because:
1. Its my wife's daily driver and I'm in a Subaru Forester.
2. All of the young Texas Roughnecks that make more money than me are now in western PA and are not only checking out my truck but are also checking out my wife.
3. The badge should read FourRunner not 4Runner.

Move out west in the mountains and you may change your mind. I just finished 3 trips in the mountains over 6000 miles. If you call climbing hills with the rpm at 4500-5000 for long distances on steep grades low rpm then you think different than me. Low rpm torque is lacking big time as you state. The thing is pretty much a dog at high altitudes and higher highway speeds with any kind of steep grade. Throw in a head wind and it is not fun. More gears would help to narrow the gap between the gears. Sometimes one gear is to high but the next lower gear is to low. Sometimes I take the cruise off so that is does not keep trying to downshift into 3rd and avoid the very high rpm. I just give up, slow down and let the other cars pass. Even my wife who does not care about cars at all comments on how slow this thing is compared to other cars we have owned.

This is my only real gripe. Wish it had a V8 or even better, s forced induction engine along with more gears. Other than that I love my 4Runner for what it is. Not a great steer, but a wonderful truck that excels in the wild.

So ruthless! I would have never been attacked like this on the Subaru Forester forum! My 2014 Forester XT does have nearly the same amount of HP and Torque as my 2015 4Runer. It is also smart enough to be in AWD when it needs to be! And over the last 88K miles of running it like a rally car I'm still getting a solid 27mpg. The downside with THE Forester is, I have a lot of single 65+ men staring in my window as I pass them hoping for a glimpse of a good looking widowed outdoorsy type GILF. It makes for an awkward stare...
Now that I think about it I realize they probably think I still live with my mom and I'm borrowing her car...

Anyway, yes the 4Runner could use some more power. But it is sufficient.

Another thing, it needs either a larger sunroof or a second one further back. Its pretty tiny for such a big roof. It is quiet even with the sunroof and rear window down though.

Also why is there a dip stick for the windshield wiper fluid??? Just fill it up to the brim like everyone else!

If you ever had an FJ you would feel like you could circumnavigate the globe on the 4Runner's fuel tank.

To be fair, most of it has to do with most FJ's abysmal gas mileage.

My FJ60 and FZJ80 both had single digit gas mileage.

Sorry, I guess I should have been a little more specfic. I meant an FJ Cruiser. They get comparable mileage to the 4Runner but they have tiny fuel tanks.

Back from a first long road trip and this thing is slowwwwwww. Just have to live with it for all the other good, but hills are challenging and tiring. You have to wind her way up for 80-85MPH.(there are roads in the west I normally do 90) Maybe a reason we only got 16.7 average on a 13hr drive back all highway :shocked: We were closer to 17.9 in town.

The back of the driver seat. It feels like there is a brick/2x4/15lb dumbbell or maybe the head of a 15 pound sledgehammer somewhere around or below the lumbar jamming into my lower back no matter what I do. Sitting in an all metal folding chair is about 10 times more comfortable. If it wasn't for the airbags and active headrest B.S I would have already gutted the entire back of the seat except for the foam.


2015 SR5 Premium just under 1,000 miles. I'm 5'10 200Lbs.

The fact that my keys seem to always slide perfectly between the driver's seat and the center console, slipping between the carpeting below. They magically end up in the hardest spot to retrieve. I'm contemplating a mod to create a plastic chute to make them slide right to the second row.

I really love my 4Runner. I have had my '15 LE for three weeks now and love every time I get in it to drive. I find myself running senseless errands to drive it. . If there is one thing, it would be the lack of a V8 option for me. We had a 2007 LE V8 that had over 200k miles on it and it was awesome. Our new one has a third row now with the two kiddies just in case. As I think about the engine in the '15, it isn't that bad. Yes, it could use more torque and power but I haven't had any issue with it. Our other car is a 2013 BMW X5 5.0 with the m-performance package which gave it a little more HP than the other 5.0's and torque so it has 455 HP and 425 torque or so. Yes, I love that power but there is something about the 4Runner that gives me comfort and confidence. Not that I am not confident in the X5 but it is just different. I love both cars for different reasons. If Toyota releases a V8 in the next gen release I will trade our '15 4Runner in for it. I am not expecting that to happen so I will be keeping this one for a long time.
