Why is it so hard to pick a dbl din radio, RDS?

After looking and looking at radios, tryin to find one that has all the features I am looking for, I finally find it. The JVC KW-AVX830

Rear usb- check
Built in bluetooth- check
Dual Zone capable- check

Then I find out that it wont fit because the screen folds down ??? Also when putting in the specifics of my vehicle, If I click without RDS it says it fits... If I put that my vehicle has RDS, it then says the unit will not fit????? Why is this so difficult...... Can anyone help me out here... I have looked at radios till Im blue in the face. I had almost decided to go with a pioneer but once I saw them in person I ruled them out... I need some help from the yota audio gods....

Do you currently have the JBL system?

If not, then I don't think you have RDS either. I'm pretty sure RDS only comes with the JBL head unit. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Nope... dont have the JBL system... How would I know if I have RDS??? Ill post a pic of my unit in the morning..

If you can see the names of the radio stations you're listening to, then you've got RDS.

If your 4runner is 2003-05 and you don't have the JBL, then I can say with near certainty that you don't have RDS. However, if it's later, you'll have to test this by seeing if you can see the names of the radio stations (i.e. WFRE or Froggy 106.9, etc). I can tell you this: just because you may have a text button on your head unit, that doesn't mean you have RDS. I had that button on my stock head unit, and supposedly, all it does is tell you the names of songs on CDs that have that information recorded onto them (never tested this out, but I do know that it didn't do anything at all when I was listening to the radio - with any of the many radio stations I tried - a clear indication that I didn't have RDS).

its an 06 sport edition... I could have sworn I have seen the names of stations come across it, but I wouldnt put any money on it... I did just purchase the car so this is one of those things that I havent paid attention to... here is a pic of the unit.

So the head unit fitment has the most to do with what kind of mounting bracket you can get for the space. Your head unit seems to be the same shape as mine, with the same shape of dash opening. See this pic of my head unit (first) and the JBL head unit for comparsion:

So there are two different mounting brackets. Yours will fit the same characteristics as the one I ordered, just in double DIN. So I think it's safe to say that you should select the non-RDS and non JBL options, and go with whatever that gives you. You still may want to see if your head unit has RDS, but to be honest, I have no idea what difference it'll make (maybe with the wiring harness? but doubtful). I can tell you that the bracket you get from putting in the non JBl and non RDS options will fit your dash opening, thus any head unit that they say will fit with these options selected will indeed fit. The product link from crutchfield was brought up when I selected w/o JBL, w/ RDS. This is not the one you want, so you need to answer w/o JBL, w/o RDS.

The one you linked to may work, but from the pic of the brackets, it doesn't look like it has the proper mounting hole locations. Those may be included, just not pictured, but I can't tell. I can say that this one is the one you need (or rather, one that will work):

Any double din head unit that crutchfield says will fit your car with these options selected (non JBL and non RDS) will fit your car, and it will use this bracket that I've linked to in this post. Hope this is a bit more clear.

Yep, thanks alot... What throwed me for a loop was not knowing which unit I had because obviously that makes a huge difference ha ha ....

Yeah, I know what you mean. That threw me off too when I was looking for my head unit. Basically, it was the text button on my HU that made me think I might have RDS. After doing more research, though, it seems that only the JBL units have RDS. Doesn't really make sense then for Crutchfield to even allow for the possibility of non JBL w/ RDS or JBL w/o RDS. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think these two options are nonsense. You can only have JBL w/ RDS or non JBL w/o RDS.

Thx for checking that... Some where on amazon a box came up and said "check to see if it fits your vehicle" and that kit came up so hopefully thats the same with the wiring harness it recommended... Now that I can move on to finally picking out a HU, Im gonna post links to what I have in the cart... Hopefully it will all work..

After looking and looking, I think I have finally came up with the components I need to make the radio install go on as planned. Its still a toss up between 2 H/U, the best I can tell the only difference between the 2 is that the 840 has a motorized screen.
