i am a long time GM owner and i have never heard anywhere that 2005 was a bad year. where do you cite this information?

No fuel filter is one thing so they were notorious for fuel pump issues, the gauge cluster was bad those years too. Also they used drum brakes on the back that year that were notorious for warping. Not to mention all the rust issues with that body style too.

I don't trust consumer reports style websites like that, you can pull up the same sheet for any GM truck and it'd have the same red marks. Regardless of your biased that GM trucks suck the Gen3 LSx small blocks are among the most reliable engines ever made and deserve to be put on the same pedestal as the dodge 318 and Toyota 22r, yet they give them a red X across all years(whatever that means) also drive train, the 4L80e is among one of the most bullet proof transmissions ever made and same with the 14 bolt rear axle, in fact so much that people often seek to swap this drivetrain into other vehicles, again consumer reports give it a bad name. But alas steering and suspension the ONE single WORST and weakest part of any GM truck gets a green check mark? Obviously shows that chart is absolute rubbish, these trucks eat tie rods, idler arms and ball joints like its their job!
The fuel pump usually fails around 100,000 miles, maybe I am just used to driving crappy "unreliable" trucks but if any one part last 100,000 miles I am ok with it. Also in my years of owning GM trucks and being on truck forums I have yet to see a GMT800 truck with premature rust issues unless it came from the rust belt, however the previous generation GMT400 88-99 was notorious for rusted out cab corners and rocker panels.

Yep, you must've missed my previous post. I went through 3 transmissions although I think the 2nd and 3rd rebuild may have been due to choosing a poor shop because the 3rd rebuild has held up for a long time while the other two only got about a year.
Yep, my 4.8L was (at the time) the most fuel efficient V8 ever put in a production truck, and it had plenty of power. I remember once in high school my friend with a 5.3L (while pulling a boat) outran a suped up (for racing) F-150 that was about the same year model.
And yes, I'm pretty sure that eating the tie rods, idler arms, and ball joints was it's second, part-time job.

3 transmissions..SMH lol the 4L60e is pretty ****ty in stock form. Let me guess you broke shift band servos?
Toss in a beast sun shell and 5 pinion planetaries with corvette servo or billet servo with upgraded 2-3 clutch and it's good for 500hp though

Mind had the 4l60e in it I believe. Mine was a 1500. Don't be me wrong, I loved the truck, mine was just a money pit though. I'm sure not all of them are that way. Mine must have been made on a Friday.

No the 4L60e is just hit or miss transmission, it dates back to the th350 which became the 700r4 when they slapped an overdrive unit to the back and became the 4L60e in the early 90s around 93 iirc. It's essentially the same transmission they have been using for over 30 years. It's a great transmission and GM has a "if it ain't broke don't fix it attitude" unfortunately as engines became more powerful over the years instead of beefing up the internals they just added torque management and fuel enrichment programs to try and extend the life of the transmission. As you found out it just wasn't enough. The new 6 speeds are beefy though.

3 trannys is pretty brutal.
Our truck at work is a 2011 GM 3500 with the 6.0L 6speed. Everyday it tows 10,000lbs very nicely and even handles up to 25,000lbs (no tongue weight) without issues. But the build quality is horrible. There's left over bits of plastic on the edges of the trim pieces, the "upper" glove lid has a 1/4in gap in it. And god forbid you want to put it in 4x4, the manual transfer case is a pig to shift. And from what I can tell it's normal because the other chev's in the company are the same. While our Ford goes from 2wd to 4lo and back like butter. And I'm not a big Ford fan, just an observsation

The GMT900's fit and finish is horrible, go look at the fenders and bumper alignment. As much as I love GM I prob won't be buying another one of their products in the future, next pick up will be a Ford more than likely.

i have a 3 week old son, no wheeling for me any time soon. and the other threads for 4th gen 4Runners sucked, thats why i made this.
Hey @rebelbowtie, no need to stop wheeling with a baby. They are all buckeled in and secure. just need to plan for the feedings every 2 hours 
Trust me i did it with my daughter (now 2) it was a blast! I have a new one on the way in Mid june and still plan to go wheel shortly after. Maybe it's cause my wife is awesome, yeah that could be it
