well theres a few things. your thermostat could be stuck, which would cause it to get hot. you could have a blown head gasket, there are a few ways to check that. theres a kit you can buy that comes with what looks like a turkey baster and a special fluid that smells the coolant and if it changes colors then you have a blown head gasket. you can get the kit from Matco.

Does it ever heat up even when idle?
I had a similar problem, but I had an extra "symptom".
Check the ground under the engine to see if there's any coolant leaking on the ground.
That happened to me a few times and I freaked out.
One easy cheap thing to do to rule out a possibility is to burp and flush the cooling system.
One the engine is cold and there's no pressure on the main rad. hose, take off the rad. cap and start the engine. If you have pressure or air stuck in the system somewhere, after a little bit, you will see bubbles popping out. Then, when done, turn off the engine and drain the radiator. Finally, replace the coolant into the radiator with the proper water/coolant mix.
Hope this helps. It may not be the answer to your problem, but it's a start and it's not that hard to do.

Could be a number of things. Bad t-stat, or water pump, or even blown head gaskets. There should be oil in your coolant and vise versa (will look like chocolate milk on the oil dipstick), if its a head gasket. Bad water pump normally spits water on the ground (or drips). If you don't see ether of those things just change the t-stat. There is only one way I know to test t-stats and its not worth your time to do for a cheap part. So just change it.
