No need for a 6" lift to run 35" tires, provided you don't mind breaking out the nibblers.
Arctic Truck's AT35 conversion for the LC/Prado 150 (essentially the same platform as the 5th gen 4Runner) only uses a 40mm (1.57") lift but they do also lift the body, trim the fenders and install custom fender flares.
AT35 < Land Cruiser 150 / Prado < Toyota < Brands < Arctic Trucks
IMHO, this is 35's done right.

may need some stronger IFS stuff too!
Exactly. Pawzitiv and I know a guy with a 91 4Runner who runs 35s at stock height. Lots of trimming needed, but there's very little that stops him. One other thing that I didn't see mentioned yet in this thread is that 6" of lift significantly raises your centre of gravity meaning that you could get tippy pretty fast in off camber situations.IMHO, this is 35's done right.
FJ guys are running 4-6 inch lifts all day. Most of them are running 35's. May wanna see what they are running to give you an idea. Some of have regeared with Nitro 4:56 gears as well.
*edit* I dug a little deeper and the bracket kits and etc that fit the earlier FJ's may work on our T4R's, but the rear brackets will need to be modified to work with the larger differential housing. So it is possible.
