Why not OME 880/906? Talk me out of it.

So with just a 2" lift, your rear axle is off? What are the implications of that? Doesn't seem like that should happen with such a mild lift...

I wouldn't worry about the rear axle being off. My rear is lifted about 4" and the rear axle is visibly shifted to the passenger side but I don't notice any negative driving characteristics from it. It's actually been beneficial because it brings the driveshaft away from my gas tank skid, which is chewed and smashed up enough as it is...

Parts Ordered!

After reading Speedy's post and video, I'm going to give the TRD Tundra/906 rear lift a shot. All parts are ordered and arriving this week! Found the TRD coils for $125 on toyotaonlineparts.com. Turns out, the cheapest option is right sold from a dealer right here in Richmond! 5100s, OME 906 coils, and Tundra coil isolator all ordered from Wheelers. Hope to install this weekend.

I got the front jacked up yesterday, to inspect the LBJ's and OTRE. To my surprise, i couldn't find play in any of them! I grabbed the top/bottom and both sides of the tires and shook. Used a pry bar under the tire and applied upward pressure. Nothing again. The only thing I didn't inspect were the ITRD as I didn't want to mess with take the boot off. For now, I think I'll just install the shocks/coils and see how the ride is.

I have a 2002 4runner. I wanted a slight lift in the back and more load capable springs, so I went with the 906s. They were perfect. At the same time, I also replaced the fronts with Monroe Quickstruts (OEM size), and new monroe shocks in the rear (OEM Size). I was happy with the slight rake, and it's perfect since I tow a lot in the summer.

The 906s don't give that much lift

Yeah, that's a good stance on your Runner! I'm a little nervous that the 906's won't be high enough for the Tundra coils, but Speedy has maintained 1/2" of rake on his, so I'm hoping for the same. If not, I'll likely throw a few trim packers in there.

Installed!

Have you installed yet?

Yes! I installed last weekend. It was a bit of a process, but I'm not an expert wrencher.

Quick takeaways: spring compressors were a terrible idea. My buddy and I could not get the spring compressed enough to use the old top hats. After sweating over those for 2 hours, we took them to a mechanic nearby, who compressed the old set-up and built the new ones, all for $60. From there, slipping the new coilover was pretty easy - we used a giant yard digger to lever the lower control arm down to get the lower shock mount into place.

The 3rd top shock mount bolt was near impossible to get to, even with a open-ended wrench. We used a bar to bend the top of the wheel well above the top hat. This made it possible to access the 3rd bolt from the engine compartment, with a long socket extension. Wish we thought of that 30 minutes sooner...

We ran out of time to do the rear, so I took it for an alignment at Merchants - $100 for a 12-month alignment. While there and needing to get back home (2 hours away), I asked what they'd charge to swap out the rears for me. They charged me less for labor than what was called for, and did a great, quick job. It was either pay them, or wait a few weekends with a low rear, until I could find time to do it myself. Glad I just went ahead and got it done.

The stance is great. I'll have to measure again, but I was around 22.5" hub to fender in the front. Will try to get some pics soon. I think the height is perfect for stock 265/70/16 tires. The ride so far is great - in all honesty, it doesn't feel much different than the stock stuff I had, which makes me wonder if my components were as shot as I thought. No complaints with the ride.

Which Richmond dealer did you get the TRD coils from and how much were they? I'm in MD and thinking about this exact same lift combo. If the price is right, I might make the drive to Richmond and pick them up one weekend.

I got the TRD coil P/N from Speedy's videos (48131-AF090 Yellow/Blue and 48131-AF100 Yellow/Yellow). Is that all I need to provide to get the correct coils?

I also may need to go a similar route and have the lift installed, as I live in a townhouse and not able to work on my 4runner. What did you think of the work they did at Merchants? If I can't get help from a friend I'll need to install at a shop. By the way, I've also got a new (to me) 1998.

The dealer is McGeorge Toyota, but the parts must be ordered from their wholesale parts website. They charge $9 for local pick-up (lame) plus tax. If you walk in and try to order, you'll pay retail. I think I paid right around $125 per coil. Not bad for brand new. I searched car-part.com and found used coilover sets for almost as much.

Those part #'s from Speedy are correct - just search the 48131-AF090 - their website does not ask for the color combo, but they were correct.

I usually hate Merchants with a passion, but figured for just an alignment it wouldn't be too bad. And $100 for a 1 year alignment was pretty good. The guys were great, we were shooting it in the waiting room, and kindly offered me a good labor price (I didn't tell them my parts were not stock). I think they figured it out, haha. But they did a good job on the rear. They quoted my buddy $350 in labor to do his fronts, which he then did himself. It would be pricey real quick if you paid them to do the entire thing, and I'm not sure I'd want to trust any random Merchants mechanic with my entire suspension.

What lift did you see?

I need new shocks and springs all round but dont want a lift. Thinking of the Monroe pre built struts for the front and kyb shocks with moog springs for the rear.

For what it's worth I'm running 285s on a hybrid 880/906 lift. The 906 rear coils are paired with OME trim packers (30mm DS and 20MM PS) to compensate for lean and the heavy bumper/tire carrier. Up front I'm running 880 coils with a trim packer on the DS and Toytec Top Plate Spacers both sides.

I've been VERY pleased with the load carrying capacity of the 906 coils. For example I had 4 heavy 265s, E load with wheels in the back last week along with the heavy rear bumper and tire carrier AND a full size 285, E load, hanging off the back with minimal sag. Also have had it loaded down many times with full camping gearing, 4 people and gear up top with minimal sag.

Running an ARB with a winch and steel cable up front as well and the 880s handle it fine with the top plate spacers.

Shameless pic...

I've been reading this post as I'm needing to replace shocks and possibly springs also. I need to know if this would work on a 2wd? Or is this strictly 4wd talk? What should I use to lift my rear back up?

Suspension parts (shocks/springs) are the same between 2wd and 4wd.

What could potentially be negative about this set-up, aside from a stiffer ride (which may actually be a benefit)? It sounds like CVs and driveline should be fine. Any other repercussions to look out for, other than a sweet looking rig?

I've only had the set-up for 2 weeks, so I can't say much for what repercussions may come down the road. But regarding a stiffer ride, I wouldn't call it stiff (in any negative sense) at all. In my opinion, it feels perfect. Not soft, not jarring, but right where it needs to be.
