Will leaving key in accessory mode kill battery?

Going to tailgate party and normally run my small tv off of the rear accessory plug on my tahoe but the 2015 4runner accessory plug only runs when the ignition is on. I hate this feature but dont want to go thru the whole rewire that i saw posted in one of the threads. So, my question is, can i turn the accessory key on for several hours without killing the battery. Want to connect my inverter then plug my 60 watt tv into the plug. Has always worked in the past but I've never had to turn the accessory key on to make the rear plug hot. Not sure what else will be drawing from the battery when in this position..

I use a box fan in ACC at field trials. After a couple of hours the truck will disable the outlet. I usually turn the truck on for awhile and let it run, then off again.

Grab yourself a booster/jump pack and just jump start it if it goes dead.

Lol. If I were bringing a jump pack I would simply run the tv off the jump pack instead of my car battery and risk killing it. I will have jumper cables and 400 cars parked around me for the football game but was wondering how much draw come from having the acc ignition on

I would think very little draw from having the key on only, but lots of draw from everything you have plugged in. I've listened to Pandora thru my sound system for hours at a time before while in the garage working and never killed the battery, but thats probably not a lot of draw down. Since so many vehicles around to jump you why not just test it out and find out. Worst case is you need to get jumped.

You will kill the battery in a few hours in the ACC mode. A much better play is to run dedicated, fused power to the rear from the battery. I have an Indel fridge and can run the fridge for 16 hours with a drop of only .5 volts. I ran dedicated power after killing the batt a couple of times by leaving it in the ACC position.

I also installed a separate lighter socket and digital voltmeter in the rear power panel so that I could monitor the voltage while using battery power.

Just run the engine after every hour or so, and a final one before you go into the stadium so you aren't worrying about it.

60W / 0.9 efficiency = 66W input. 66W / 12.5V = 5.28Amps. Not sure what the amp-hours of the battery is. If its 20AH then 20AH/5.28 = 3.7 hours.

To be safe, you could try it out at home, where you have either a charger or your get a jump from your wife's car if you flub it up. I would not go putting fuses and second batteries in just for one tailgate party.

Make sure you turn off everything else, lights, the cabin air blower, radio. Close the doors. Put the beer in a regular cooler.

By the way, you can have someone make a bare metal duplicate key, and it will let you turn ACCesories on but not start your 4Runner ie drive off with it if you forget.

(I work at a heavy duty alternator manufacturer, and Skil in the past, but I wouldn't call myself a battery expert.)

LOL what the hell kind of jump pack do you have? I am referring to a small LiIon pack (fits in your glove box) that usually run off a couple 18650 cells, not a 35+ pound lead-acid POS.
Besides that how long you think a TV is going to run off a 5 amp hour battery in a POS lead acid jump pack versus a 55+ amp hour battery in your car Mr. Smarty Pants

I suppose you could be Mr. Math instead and look on the back of your TV to check the amperage draw. You can also test the current drawn with a good clamp multimeter, (I just borrowed one, did, and mine draws 0.9 amps with nothing on, doors closed) that are not 100% accurate but maybe that helps.

But hey there is nothing wrong with inconveniencing someone else because you were to smart to carry a jump pack.

Hahaha nah, not fired up, too much coffee and fully being a smart arse.

I was curious too about the amp draw. I have a 31 deep cycle and last winter I hadn't driven it much at all, one cold week I went to drive to work and it barely cranked over. I live super close to work and ride my bike when I can so the thing doesn't really get good solid charges (why I carry a booster pack )

It was a good excuse to grab one the network techs with a Fluke and try it out. Mine read; 0.9 no load, 8.7 with the stereo on door open, and 28.4 with the door open stereo on and blower motor running on high.

So many funny quotes i dont know which one to quote, lol. This site is always more colorful than most of the others i visit which keeps it fun.

I have tickets to the game but a big part of the fun is going to the game several hours early and sending up a huge bar and food. The tv is to view all the other college games that are on before and after the game i am attending in person.

I would consider a smaller portable deep-cycle battery with no specified cranking power at all, like this:

If my math is right (which is never a certainty) with an 80% efficient inverter you'll get about 12 hours of power for your TV. And your engine battery remains unravished and ready when you need it.
