better question, [MENTION=168053]mvt4r[/MENTION] why pay extra for an after market rim if you're just going to hide it under your truck where road grime and salt can fester upon it? Seems like a waste of money for road rot.

So you can do a 5 tire rotation and not end up with a mismatched spare after your other 4 tires wear down and you pick a different replacement tire.

I've never done a 5 tire rotation on any car I've ever owned.

Hell, most cars don't even have a full size spare.

Every other car I've owned doesn't have a full sized spare, so it doesn't matter, the donut is always mismatched. Once you've got a matched set of 5, it is nice to wear them evenly. It also extends the time between tire replacement (though that isn't my primary motivation), not sure about the OP.

What he said. I bought 5 set of same tires so i can rotate them so they last longer. If I do not do this I would imagine, by the time I need to replace my tires, my spare under my truck will be still unused, yet it is aged and that I have to replace it again. So why buy 5 more tires again, I would rather use all 5 and rotate than have my spare never used and got thrown away. Unless I am mistaken that spare stored under the truck can last more than 8 years and it will be fine with worn out tires when used as spare.
Also do spare wheels get beat up that bad if it is stored under? I dunno how much rock gets thrown to spare wheel stored under, any experience?

Come to think of it, not doing 5 tires with a full spare adds insult to injury. If you have 4 1/2 worn tires, it is no longer safe to run with an unused spare for an extended period of time. At that point your choice is to allow the tire shop to shave the original spare and buy a new tire, losing tire life on the spare, or to buy 4 new tires to match the original spare.

I think the wheel will be fine, but I haven't done it (yet) so I'd love to hear from someone who has.

Personally I like the rear tire under the truck regardless. The truck is shorter that way which matters for daily driving/parking/garage space. Further, the tire provides some protection for the diff (depending on the angle at which you land on a rock off road), and provides protection for the hitch and rear bumper in my case, since it hangs slightly lower than the hitch. Sure, you lose some clearance but I'm still getting used to the insane amount of clearance I already have. Maybe I'll care after I grow into the truck.

The biggest danger to that rear wheel is trail damage, IMHO, and your active wheels are at similar or worse risk.

Upon researching more, 5 tire rotation is more common than 4 tire rotation for most offroad users/users with bigger tires. Most of the justification was that if you have all 5 same size tire why waste the 5th without using it in rotation since dry rot kills the spare eventually.

I already have 5 same size tire and I bought 5th same size so I do not need to worry about smaller spare tire ruining my drive train when I use it.

I just do not have matching wheel on my spare, so I wanted to make sure it will fit down there before ordering another matching 6 shooter wheel. Sounds like it will fit from what people's response here. I would have to try facing the wheel up to avoid from getting ruined.
