Will never happen because of our (USA) HUGE natural/oil resources. Our land is truly blessed. (And no, i am not religious but one cannot deny how rich our land is.)

Now, if a future President decides to ignore what we have and pursue some dumba$$ agenda resulting in us going back to importing tons of oil and be reliant on Middle East, then yeah gas prices may go up. IF that happens, then yeah, i will buy a cheaper transportation vehicle and my LC becomes a weekend car only. In fact, right now, i drive 100 miles everyday...and mostly i use my minivan for that.

It's already at $7 in some states like California. I drive 20k miles a year. I can average just over 20mpg in my PRO if I keep it under 70mph. Just got 21mpg on a round trip to Cape Cod. But at 20mpg, I'm using 1000 gallons of fuel per year. We hit $5 for regular so it's costing me a little over $400 a month just for gas. I've heard predictions of up to $10 a gallon. I had a brief thought of trading it in for a Highlander hybrid but I'll just work some extra overtime to drive the 4Runner and make the liberals angry.

I mean in actuality the difference in gas mileage is not as drastic as it feels. Average miles driven a year is 15k. If gas is $5, then it would cost $3,750 a year to drive a 4Runner, and $2,142 to drive a hybrid highlander. You're only saving $134/ month. You could find other ways to save/ make that up IMO.

My V8 gets 15mpg, but I also don't have a car payment. So I'm happy.

Um, they can do that because they have billions of dollars from selling oil on the world market. So we're the ones subsidizing that price for their citizens. Fun, huh?

BTW, every company cares about profits because it's the reason companies are started to begin with. Nobody's investing millions or billions to invent a product or establish a service along with creating the organization and infrastructure to offer it out of the goodness of their hearts. And if you think government is the answer, I don't know what to tell you. Name one thing government does well and efficiently. If you want to see how people live when the government "takes care" of them, ask Native Americans or vets.

I also have a Mazda MX-5 that gets, literally, double the mileage of my 4runner. If I drive it easy, I can get close to 40mpg. I drive at least 50 miles a day so I’ve been using that for my commuter car and saving the 4runner for road trips and beach driving.

pain at the pump is difficult, but i'm getting more concerned for the upcoming addition of winter heating season added on top. people can drive less/slower, maybe pick up a more fuel efficient vehicle, use public transportation, etc. but we really can only turn down the thermostat so much. i live in the NE, and heating oil dominates. i'm working on an old (1900) residential house that, according to PO oil delivery records, consumed between 2500-3000 gallons of oil just for heating season. at $6/gal that is $15-$18k!! water and heat are currently off, and it will remain shut down this winter.

i used to have a miata, but couldn't live with one now. however, even at $1.99/gal i hate getting 17 mpg. am considering adding something that gets much better fuel mileage like a used prius, or even a utility vehicle like a honda element.

I was watching this video where this guy was talking about how he had to evacuate during that big power outage in Texas. Evacuate my dick. Put on more layers. Read some books. Dig up the old Victoria's Secret catalogs. I survived, and I got reacquainted with some early 00s models. It was overall a win. I welcome the next power outage. i assume you are being funny. a week is not comparable to a heating season that runs october through april. there are millions of children, elderly, disabled, etc who just can't put on extra layers and tough it out for 6 months.

Those 1980/90s Tercels and Civics were tin cans with minimal safety features. For me at this point in my life, i am worth more alive than dead. And with so many trucks and big SUVs around, i refuse to be driving anything small. When i had Prius, this was a concern because you have Ford Heavy Duty or 18 wheelers or 4runners blowing past me.

I can definitely understand your concern and obviously it all comes down to preference/opinion for each of us as individuals.... I personally have only been in 2 or 3 accidents in almost 20 years and only 1 of them was "bad" but even that I walked away without a scratch or soreness. Owned plenty of 90's compact cars out of the 18 or 19 vehicles I've owned.....plus if I'm driving a Civic 5 speed on the freeway, rarely ever is anyone passing me, I'm spending more time making sure slow people don't cut me off lol

Also just side note, mid to late 90's Civics all typically rated "Great & Acceptable" which are the top 2 highest ratings in several measures for their Crash Worthiness by the IIHS. So not exactly a "tin can"

Here we are with a revised answer in 2022 where gas prices are at $7.00 and up all around the Bay Area. From back in 2020 gas prices where $4.00 less a gallon with still not much of a break. Yes I will still keep my 4 runner, even though she’s a gas hog Forsure.

Those ratings are relative. IIHS has updated their testing protocol over the years to be tougher. So, ratings in the 90s cannot be compared to today’s ratings.
