Will you keep your 4runner if gas hits $8 a gallon?

For a grown ass man, yeah, 19 is a child. Thai has probably brought her up a dozen times in this thread alone. His Yahoo algorithm is feeding it to him - there's nothing like that even on the front page of liberal CNN.

That’s the problem with the other side….they can criticize others but when the insults come back, they bring up irrelevant stuff. :target:

I feel bad for her really. Her parents are both in the acting/arts business so it's pretty clear she's just a 'face' for the movement the Western youth can identify with.

(Although always strangely quiet on 'embedded carbon', such as in existing iPhones, vehicles, appliances, clothes... But then that wouldn't be good for the economy...)

Fair enough I don't know how things are in the news media over there - I wouldn't be surprised to hear a man over here mentioning Greta, one way or another.

Legally though, here and in Europe where she is from, she is an adult. I know you guys have over 21 for some things so I am not commenting on that.

I love this "but solar's useless unless it's 120% efficient at all times and gives me a rimjob" and "you're a pedo" battle.

But mentally, i am only 15. :D

Ha.

I wasn't really trying to imply you're a pedo. Just that she's a dumb kid. I generally don't pay attention to any kids b/c they're generally all pretty dumb so why give her your time.

When I was in my 20s, women in their 20s were pretty dumb then, too. I don't think I'm ever going to meet a woman mature enough for me

Article: Buttigieg Wants to Mandate Electric Vehicles. He'''s Wrong

“Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, considered the most likely Democratic candidate for president in 2024 after Joe Biden in the latest Washington Post ranking, says the solution to high gas prices is getting "most Americans" to switch to electric vehicles -- willingly or not.

Buttigieg is issuing federal regulations to force states to limit the use of gas-powered vehicles. If he becomes president, we'll be living in green hell, compelled to buy pricey EVs to comply with his climate zealotry.

Right now, fewer than 1% of vehicles on the road are electric. EVs are probably the long-term future, but they won't solve the current pain at the pump; they cost too much, and charging them is a logistical nightmare. The U.S. has 145,000 gas stations but only 6,000 fast-charging stations.

EVs are not the answer. Buttigieg is living in la-la land. The average new EV costs about $66,000. A good deal is the 2022 Kia EV6, priced at $40,900 before add-ons, according to U.S. News and World Report. Even that's more than most people can afford. Three-quarters of Americans who need a car buy a used one, paying around $31,000 for it.

EVs are for big spenders. AAA reports a staggering 78% of EV buyers own other cars. They're in the income bracket to afford multiple cars. They drive the EV short distances but still fall back on their gas-powered car for long-distance driving.

On July 7, he proposed regulations to compel states to reduce CO2 highway emissions, effectively outlawing gas-powered vehicles. The regulations appear to exceed the Department of Transportation's authority and will be challenged in court. But they indicate Buttigieg's mindset.”

All this back and forth will be irrelevant if the other side gets what they want. Penalized all of us who own gas powered vehicles probably thru taxes at gas pump. More taxes when you go buy 4Runners. Insurance rates will go up. Or whatever else they can think of.

Great stuff. I immigrated away from Communism for a reason….

Seriously, for those on the other side, IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT? You want to be taxed to hell and back for driving your 4runner? That in near future, your 4runner will have no place to get gas? That it becomes so much of a financial burden that you have to get rid of it?

And i am only talking about cars. What about natural gas for your house cooking? That will be outlawed too (see California now!). Propane? Butane? Good luck with that. Jet ski? Boat? Good luck with those toys!

Well here I go, politics, religion, our elders told us not to get on a public argument about those subjects... but.. we need to be good stewards of what we have (from home to the whole planet), EV will eventually replace combustion, before we push the agenda we need to think of the ECO impact of those “alternative energies, the battery life of these EV have a limited span, what are we going to do with all those toxic heavy metals? Oil is bad due to the byproducts but wind and solar are not free of side effects either, large wind farms decimate bird populations more than oil has in all its spills, solar farms need to clear the ground of all vegetation which negatively impacts the environment and so on and so forth, so let’s not write off one or the other for they are not mutually exclusive, what we need to do is to continue improving the combustion engine and reducing its byproduct, improve batteries so we can have a better less toxic battery and longer life, get rid of wind and solar farms in favor of nuclear energy, eventually we should, in a 100 years or so replace oil/wind/solar for nuclear and some sort of storing device that does not use toxic metals. The subject is difficult to discuss in a forum but these are my 2 cents in a nutshell

It would be great if they could use nuclear or even renewable to make synthetic hydrocarbons...it would still be carbon neutral if you're bothered by that sort of thing.

To me it just seems like nature/physics has the problem of energy storage all sorted out already (Stick a carbon atom on hydrogen) and we're just reinventing the wheel with pure hydrogen/ammonia/batteries. Only now the wheel is square and less efficient. (More overheads)

I see the political rhetoric that got me banned years ago is okay here now. That moron that called himself an engineer must be gone now. If you bought a 4runner for the gas mileage then you’re not the sharpest tool in the shed. Get a hybrid or an EV and keep your 4runner, they run forever and go anywhere.

Yeah, I don't know. It's very selective. There's that weird-ass topic "stay safe America" or whatever with its right wing crap that keeps getting bumped with new right wing crap then locked immediately. I wonder what's up with that topic sometimes, but I don't know. I'm part of the Regressive party. Anti-abortion, pro-killing babies. But seriously, I dislike both parties, though I admittedly dislike the more wacko than Jacko turn the Republican party has taken as of late more than the recent Democrat bullcrap, and that's saying a lot considering the fertilizer warehouse operation that the Dems are these days. I vote for whatever third party's available, and if there are no third parties then I vote without casting any vote. That is to say that I go to the polling place, don't choose anything, and cast that. I figure that's the least I can do for the men and women who fought and/or died for the right to vote.

Sometimes I think non-Americans like these guys care more about America than Americans.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RC8d37bACUE

I remember having a conversation with a Vietnamese family many years ago back during Obama's second term. They were visiting from overseas. They told me that people overseas are wondering what's going on with America. We used to be the leader, but even back then we were looking like the jackasses that we are. I love this country so much, but it feels like having the parent that you're embarrassed for and are always apologizing for their doing stupid things. You love them, and you respect them, but you know there's something wrong. And before anyone takes this statement and says "yeah, you're right, and defund the police!" or "yeah, you're right, and covid is a hoax!" then stop right there, you jackasses. You both exceeded the acceptable jackass threshold.

Oh yeah, and while I have a 4Runner, I realize that EV is the future and welcome it when it matures properly and is practical enough for the everyday person. For me? I spent extra to get a 4Runner (I'm not talking about current day markups, I'm talking about how I chose to get a 4Runner instead of a current day Jeep Cherokee or something), but it was an economical decision. I'm not made of money, and while the 4Runner wasn't cheap, my old Jeep ultimately made the money I spent on my 4Runner look like chump change considering how much money I spent to keep the Jeep running for just over 80,000 miles. I'm playing the long game with the 4Runner, and little else factored into my decision to get it. If EV takes decades to fully take off, then my strategy will have paid off.

What about the billions they lost during 2019-2022?

If anyone thinks oil/energy companies are "greedy", simply buy their shares (I own BP, and will be buying Exxon on the drop) and you can share in their "Greed" (And a sea of red on your stock listings page in the case of 2020)

Of course that involves using your brain, and taking responsibility for yourself.

this is America! we aren't responsible enough for ourselves now a days

:car:

Ha, that attitude is common over here too. Price controls will be probably next, because they've always worked so well every other time they've been used...

BP had one unprofitable quarter during the pandemic. One.
They lost 5.7B in Q2.

Their profits are now at an 8 year high. Have fun at the pump.

And you, of all people, trying to tell me to take responsibility for myself, when all you've done on this thread is blame a certain type of public office holder is ****ing rich. Good one, mate.

Why would I care that their profits are at an all time high? You say that like it's a gotcha when I already said I own BP shares. :suspicious: Nothing stopping anyone here (I assume no-one bought these trucks as a pure economical mode of getting from A to B) from buying oil company shares, if they're convinced that it's all greed and they deserve free money. Cool - put your money where your mouth is, and enjoy the dividend yield!

I also didn't expect or receive any sympathy when my whole portfolio was hugely in the red in 2019/2020 and dividends were frozen. Of course NOW it's all "Well you're just lucky etc etc". So a risk of capital should be return free? I've even explained long-term investing to ANYONE who will listen. But they are not interested, although of course they always have money for trivial items.

I don't follow your last comment, sorry. I've said in this thread I don't particularly like any government. I can only speak for the UK of course. But over 20 years I have watched the puppets change every 5 years while the housing bubble continues, working people get taxed to hand money over to people for whom 'being on benefits' is a lifestyle choice. (It is my understanding we have a far more generous benefits system than you guys). I can remember being at school and you could tell whose parents were riding the benefits train - they had the newest Nike Air Max/Adidas three stripe trousers.

All that while taxes AND inflation continue to go up. Again, regardless of the party 'in power'. They're all shit.

Edit: 'Having fun at the pump' is a function of UK Government tax regimes, not BP or the WTI oil price.

Percentage of the petrol price that is duty, VAT & environmental taxes/fees 45.72%
