Will you keep your 4runner if gas hits $8 a gallon?

Soon to come will be road taxes for ALL vehicles. That includes EVs and Hybrids. I think Virginia may be starting up a pilot program to tax EV owners by the estimated mile used. (Don't quote me on it)

And! the States should. EVs are heavier than similar IC vehicles. (class/make/model) and cause more damage to roads. Road require maintenance and upkeep so that ALL may use. It is important that EVs pay their share.

Yep, going to pay whatever I have to for gas and the tax on it.

We've had road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty to be precise) forever. It switched to being based on (of course) CO2 bands some time back. Teslas and other EVs are (of course) 'free' to tax, as electricity comes from the wall.

Accelerating a big vehicle to 60mph in 3 seconds seems like it would deteriorate the road surface just as much as a Mustang/BMW/Porsche/whatever.

But it's electric so whatever, praise St Greta.

I'm betting the State Governments are noticing the loss of tax revenue at the gas pump. They'll act soon. No government lets go of money they can get.....never. lol

Louisiana already passed a law. IIRC, $60/yr tax on hybrids and $120/yr on EVs to make up some of the lost tax money (it's the $0.20/gal tax times an assumed 550gal equivalent usage).

I don't follow your last comment, sorry. I've said in this thread I don't particularly like any government. I can only speak for the UK of course. But over 20 years I have watched the puppets change every 5 years while the housing bubble continues, working people get taxed to hand money over to people for whom 'being on benefits' is a lifestyle choice. (It is my understanding we have a far more generous benefits system than you guys). I can remember being at school and you could tell whose parents were riding the benefits train - they had the newest Nike Air Max/Adidas three stripe trousers.

All that while taxes AND inflation continue to go up. Again, regardless of the party 'in power'. They're all shit.

exactly!!!!!! I always ask myself "how can i make money" every time something negative happens. When housing went nuts, and I was priced out of buying a house, I bought up all the entire mortgage sector. When gas prices went up, instead of complaining about bad policies, I went and bought up all the oil sector. So technically, all my gas I pay is free now, simply because most oil companies pays DIVIDENDS.

The irony about bad economic policies, is that it creates a buying opportunity if you can spot them....and with um..... certain um.. administrations its very easy to spot and take advantage of.

Said it before, saying it again…people get caught up by the profit number and that it’s a record or whatever but if it’s not significantly more as a percentage of total revenue than the 8% considered a fair profit, good for them. They earned it.

The Fed's dropped alot of money on us up the road as well. Infrastructure things like rural broadband or 'fiber-in-the-woods" as I call it. It's good, would have been better not to tax/print/spend but I ain't in charge. I do know the ones that are and their building all of their pet projects, but it will dry up at some point.
 
I can finally be in peace and will keep my 4Runner.

For the last 18 months of my career I was forced to drive in some of the worst traffic in Los Angeles. 35 miles each way down the 405 freeway in my 4Runner which gets 16.5 MPG. It was 3 tanks $80 - $90 every two weeks.

Now I am retired ( I took an early retirement because of this shit). I filled my tank on my last day close to home. It has been three weeks and I still have over half a tank of gas.

In the summer or when the wind blows they can shut off our power for days. If you have solar panels they get shut off as well for safety. Good luck charging your EV when that happens.

Yes after the power companies were sued into oblivion from all the wild fires in the last few years they now shut off the power every time the wind blows. Our housing has underground wiring but we are on the same grid as the foothills that have burned many times.

I have a 4500W propane generator that we have used a lot. It is a Pain to run cords thru the house. I bought a 20KW whole house one than runs on natural gas but have not had it hooked up yet. It would have enough power to charge an EV using gas. ;)
 
i'll still keep my 4runner. If the fires ever threaten my home and I needed to evac, I'd take my 4runner over my Tesla. Unless the low gas light is on.

I went with 3x powerwalls to keep the lights and AC on.
 
I have never quite understood the fascination with analyzing the cost of basic/needed commodities. For example, not too many years ago, milk (around here) cost less than $3 a gallon and now cost about $5.

The choices are - stop drinking milk or stop worrying about the cost per gallon.

I use the same philosophy when it comes to gasoline.

A fair point, but this assumes you're helpless and at the mercy of market forces. That's more true for the milk though than the gas. The reason gas prices are where they are is because a politician with different energy policies took office. I'm not defending Trump, simply stating a fact: his policies lowered US gas prices and resulted in the country being energy independent. So it doesn't have to be Trump, but you can support candidates whose approach on energy is similar.

These issues aren't complicated. It's Economics 101 and we have plenty of history to look at too, but the people in power think doing the same things that resulted in disastrous inflation before just somehow weren't done well enough last time. That's not the problem.
