Win 7 pro fail to d/l MS updates ??

I picked up a Lenovo T61 Core 2 Duo 2.1, 6 GB MB, Win 7 Pro 64 byte.
Last March MS updates were just fine. The updates for April will not d/l. It just shows 0KB and 0% complete for hours. even one at a time. I tried a KB download that was like a alternate updater, that shows 'searching for updates' for 2 hours. I just tried a system restore to early March updates, and still nothing works for the April updates now up to 17. I have run all utilities and A/V. All utilities download just fine. Laptop battery is fully charged and on a 1 GB cable modem. any ideas??? this is not a primary machine, I just update it every week, until it may take over duties as my main PC.

This is just a mental note made while listening to a tech podcast. Google "update for Windows 7 update".
 
Searching for Mr FixIt, it just kept bouncing me around the MS site. I d/l KB976264 and now the ' Windows Update Standalone Installer' is running. I tried this a few days ago, nothing found after 1 hour. fingers crossed.
 
Managed a System Restore and DNS Flush, no help. running Malwarebytes and full A/V now. I did find a utility to get my COA Key (the COA on this lappy is Vista Busniess).
 
Still a problem. Got into Safe mood and ran Memory diagnostics, and System restore. Ran all utilities( malware with rootkill, superanitispryware, Panda Cloud and 2 Antivirus. I deleted the last program I was using and tried it without the additional 4 GB MB I added. I was looking at saved sites and all the Win 7 64 byte downloads are gone now. I have my 'key', any sites still have it??
 
I finally found a download site on Microsoft to use. Just insert my key and ready to go, probably tomorrow. and reload everything. Thanks all.
 
No luck. MS says it is a manufacturers key code. This was a Vista Business COA that someone pulled that Hard Drive, put in a Western Digital and loaded Win 7 Pro 64. I guess he got a Lenovo disc, not a retail disc. I bought this a year ago. taking a break from this repair. life, so much fun
 
I found a link about deleting the software distribution files in windows. tried that, no luck. Before that I deleted the March Updates and found a April 10 update-KB2952664, not sure how that got in, not one that I tried to d/l. Anyway, still no luck. I bought a Win 7 system Re-Install DVD, I am leery of a third party disc, looking for other ideas. thanks, all
 
Back to the ms download site, I tried the Vista COA, since that is listed as a upgrade for Win 7, no luck.
 
I think that is the stand alone updater? That did not do much for me. I have deleted the March updates that may be a problem, this happened in April that made me think it is a major problem (thinking to use this laptop to replace an aging desktop). thanks
 
I had two spare PCs that I hooked up to run updates, and they both had last been updated in April. Windows update would just sit there and churn but not show any actual update, even after hours of running. I finally left each one going overnight and when I cam in in the morning they had updated. Subsequently the updater worked fine. Maybe something with the April updates is causing it to hang.
 
Usually after 2 hours, it is still at 0 KB, and 0 % complete. I could try overnight. or just wait for the May updates, or they probably are over now. One April update did make it, not sure how that happened. ??
 
I found the Start Up Disc I made when I got this. It opens to : Boot, Sources and BootMgr. None of these will open, just a pop up asking for a program to run it. If I remember the XP Start Up disc, it would open to use. ??
 
I ran that a week ago, it messed things up even more. I have deleted all March updates, I understand there is a problem with some, that didn't help.
 
How is it going?

Usually by day 2 of Windows 7 being broken I would have wiped the whole PC and reinstalled from disc. Then after everything comes up 100% with all updates I would make a backup of the full C drive to an external hard drive. C and D would be partitioned of course.
