Windshield de-icer cracks the windshield

the windshields now used on the new vehicles [not just toyota] are very thin and will crack if a impact is made . this is something I have seen lately occurring very often on these very new vehicles.
glass is part of the impact protection made so you will not get injured when it blows up on impact in accident.
many years ago this would never happen. glass was very much thicker stronger.
if you did not see that impact I would suggest have your eyes checked so the next time it gets whacked have the glass shop seal the damaged area quickly..

To be fair, when you're sitting in the driver's seat where that chip is; you'd just see the crack propagating from the bottom of the windshield. It's easy to see in the picture that it's a bit above the element, but from a driver's seat point of view that's an easy mistake to make.
The crack propagation is Up/Down of the center of that chip, temperature related fractures do not have a start point like that chip; they just are cracks with no definitive end or start. Additionally IF the crack started below the rock chip it would most likely have stopped at the rock chip until the glass was warped further (sort of why you drill holes at the end of cracks to relieve stress and prevent them from spreading) and depending on the severity of the warping effect would have started to "star" out. But in this case the origination is the weakened pit caused by the rock chip, the crack propagated both up and down at the same time and once the crack started it just kept going.

Windshield glass does not "blow up on impact" It is laminate. Side and rear window glass is tempered and it "blows up"

Everything was better in the good old days. That's why they use the windshield as a glue in structural member today and in the old days they stuck them in with butyl tape and a prayer.
I had a 76 Chevy Truck that, if driving east when the sun came up, you had to hold your head out the window to see because of the scratches, pits and delamination around the edges. Not better. Maybe thicker.

Yes , windshield have been getting thinner as times goes on for weight saving purposes. The layers are getting thinner and thinner
