Just wanted to share some pictures and my experience on resent trip (week before Christmas) from DFW area to Red River NM.
We knew about winter storm from the weather forecast, so we actually left one day earlier and split our trip there in two days in the attempt to be ahead of the storm… it worked because eventually we got to our destination safely and as planned, but we still got caught in winter blizzard.
In the morning of Monday (January 19, 2011) we left Clayton, NM going to Springer, NM this is about 80 miles trip… 10 miles from Clayton blizzard hit… temperature went from 35 to lower 20th and complete whiteouts (see pics below) in the matter of 15 minutes..
There were two trucks ahead of me, but they both turned around approximately at mid point to Springer…. We were on the road by ourselves.. I was constantly pushing at least 6 inches of fresh powder and occasionally hitting snow banks there were around 2 feet deep… I know it sounds crazy, but because of total whiteout I was using my GPS to see if I am still on the road and pointing in the right direction.. It took me 3.5 hour to drive this stretch of 80 miles.. this road was closed with barricades at the time were exiting it…
This is one trip that I will never forget and I really do not want to do it again…
Once we got to ski area it was a picture “perfect”; we were rewarded with 3 beautiful days of skiing and snowmobiling tour as a bonus. Kids and wife cannot wait to go back!:jump::bluejump:

Were family got stranded in the same blizzard, on the same road and same time… I also believe that I was one of the vehicles that past that pour family without knowing it…
P.S. 4Runner did not miss a bit… it really felt unstoppable…
the only vehicle related concern I had was my 6 years old original battery, but it was not a problem either: truck started from the half of the turn on the day we were heading back (temperature was "-5 F" that morning ).
I took the picture of 4Runner that morning, it parked next to H3 that could not start and it had a good battery… according to owner of H3 “ it starts when it wants it” :bash:LOL..
