Wiring Angel Eyes / Halo Lights

Another bump on this post... Running into the same issue.

When the headlight stalk is in the "Parking Lights" position, the headlights I have perform the way I want them to ALSO perform when the stalk is in the Auto position and the DRLs are on.

Any ideas?

So after further testing, what I'd like to accomplish, is for the DRL lights with the engine on to function the same as the parking lights with the engine off.

I tried disabling the DRLs totally, but that didn't work either...

I don't have angel eyes, but I do have extra running lights. If you're wanting the lights to just be on when the car is on and off when the car is off, you can tap into the seat heater with one of those "Add a circuit fuse" things. That's what I did with the amber running lights in my grill.

I've thought about doing that too, but I'd like the headlights to function as close to OEM as possible with the DRL system so that if for whatever reason I need to turn all of the lights off, I can at the stalk.

I think I know how to accomplish this theoretically, the physical wiring modifications are what I'm struggling with.

Essentially, there are 2 things that need to happen...

1) How to power the front running lights instead of the Amber corner lights in DRL and Running lights mode once the engine is on.
2) Turn signals are ONLY used when the turn signals or hazards are in use (aka amber lights are no longer used for DRLs).

I have access to the wiring diagram for these trucks, just figuring it all out is giving me a hard time. lol.

A lot of Toyota/Lexus/Scion models with front signals as DRLs use the 12-pin flasher.

You can actually rewire the DRL system to use other light sources besides the turn signals by using a relay. I've recently helped someone who wanted to keep DRLs with his new HID projector retrofit, his retro has white and yellow LEDs in the shrouds so he wired the white LEDs as the DRLs. Since he kept the standard incandescent turn signal bulbs he doesn't have hyper flash issues; but he'll be switching to a SmartTap and LED signals once the adapter harness arrives (on national backorder), even after the 8-pin flasher conversion the shroud DRL function will still remain because the circuit is actually triggered by the body ECU.

Saw this post in another thread, and thought it could help me/us here.

Do you have a wiring diagram showing what the above includes? I think this may be my only way of accomplishing my goals after many hours of reading.. lol.

Just an update:

Attempted to wire a relay that was to be activated by the DRL wire from the turn/flasher relay, but that was unable to supply sufficient power to the relay to close the circuit. It's a cheapo from the parts store, so honestly not surprised.

Wired the white side of my halos and LED Strips into an ignition-activated fuse/circuit and ran that wire to the front of the vehicle.

I believe my next step is to wire in a 5 pin relay and switch so when the vehicle is off, the halos and led strip flashes with locking and unlocking of the vehicle, and when the vehicle is running the Halos and strip are white with the switch available to manually turn off the Halo and LED strip if desired.

I tried searching for an LED Switchback controller that would power different circuits based on a detected input, but no such thing exists.

S1 Switchback Module (pair)

If you still need a diagram I can post it up, give me a day or two.

JONBOY345 can you list your setup and what functions you want done? I'm starting to get confused LOL

So far I've gathered you have both switchback halos and strips, and would like the white circuits (for both halos and strips) to act as your parking lights plus DRLs, and ambers as purely turn signals?

Correct. I have switchback Halos and LED Strips.

I want to integrate them into the OEM system as much as possible, while DRLs and Running Lights are white on the Halos and Strips, and Amber is ONLY the turn signal or hazard light. Additionally, would like the ability to turn off the lights completely at the stalk as well.

Currently, I have disabled the DRL circuit in my truck at the DRL relay. I have wired the white of both LED strip and halo to an ignition on source in the vehicle.

By adding the 5-pin/ relay I hope to re-enable the flicker of the lights when locking/unlocking the vehicle as now that is disabled with the DRL disable. I was also planning on wiring in a switch, that would allow me to turrn off the new white LED circuit if needed while the vehicle is running.

I'd wire the DRL circuit to the 5-pin relay so that circuit is closed when the vehicle is off, wire the new white LED circuit to the relay so that it is only closed when the relay is energized by an ign-on source.

Ideally, I'd love to find a switchback controller that would detect steady 12v and power the white of the LEDs then using the same input source (such as the turn signal wire that functions a DRL and turn signal/hazards), detect pulsing (such as turn signal or hazard) and then power the amber of the LEDs. I've called TRS and Diode Dynamics, and the impression I'm getting is that such a thing doesn't exist.

Hope that's clear as mud. lol.

Understood  Do those halos and strips have separate inputs for full and partial brightness for the white circuits?

They do not.

They have Constant 12v, White, and Amber (amber overriding white when powered simultaneously) and ground.

I'm assuming you disconnected the light green w/red strip wire to the flasher relay like in this writeup https://www.top4runners.com/ja/2007/drlmod.html and your 5-pin relay is the usual Bosch/TYC SPDT

87 and 86 share the same power source, although I put down constant 12v you can use your ignition ON source.

Switch is just a simple SPST type, no need for a SPDT like in JA's writeup

This is very similar to what I was attempting to do last week, but the issue I was running into was the DRL wire (light green/red stripe) wasn't energizing the coil sufficiently to close the circuit. I was using a cheapo from the parts store, so I'll order a high-quality Denso or Bosch 5 pin relay and try this setup.

If you have PN recommendations for the relay, let me know.

Thanks again!

EDIT: AH HA! I see what I was doing wrong. I was using the DRL wire to energize the coil, instead, I need to use the Body ECU as Ground! This should be easily accomplished. Thank you!

Another clarification, the Parking light + should be the green w/red stripe from the DRL/Flasher relay, correct?

Don't have any specific part numbers, maybe just look for Bosch, Tyco or Hella branded ones.

Yeah I forgot to ask if you knew the DRL wire was a ground LOL

The parking light + wiring doesn't come from the flasher relay, you'd basically tap into the existing parking light wiring. According to my '03 diagrams they're the green wires at each parking light socket (remaining white w/black stripe wire is ground), powered from the 10A TAIL fuse.
