Show on Discovery channel. 3 guys driving across Antarctica to the South Pole. The vehicle is a modified Toyota Tacoma. Cool. Cooler if it was a 4runner!

The Tacoma is a better choice for that kinda thing though. Not saying the 4Runner couldn't do it, but I'd pick a Taco over a 4Runner for that sort of expedition any day.

Stupid guys didn't upgrade all surrounding suspension parts after putting huge tires and weight on it. Started breaking stuff.

I'm watching it now, and these guys are idiots. How do you not have a spare tire? How do you not check every bolt on the truck every time you stop? How did you think stock IFS was going to survive 39s + Antarctica?

How on earth do you not have a shipping container full of spares?

Idiots.

Because ratings. Idiots impressing viewers with their absurd idiocracy (which is a hilarious movie) is the generic formula for reality tv!

IAbsolutely love those arctic Toyotas though. The legit ones have more mods than I can imagine (like relocated axles).

How is this for ratings. They break something stupid because they used piss poor planning. Along come a Polar Bear and eats one as the other is filming or at least scares the shit out of them.

Have you watched any reality tv before? It goes something like this:

Generally interesting topic + idiots = viewers

Never saw the show but,
My brother is in Liberia with a 1st Gen Tacoma TRD 70k miles on it AND...in the past three weeks the frame has broken twice, broke two LBJ's has broken both leaf springs, and these are just the issues that stopped them dead in their tracks im sure plenty more items have broken that he hasn't told me about. Granted they have a considerable amount of weight on the tacoma most of the time.
Definitely not the best vehicle for weighted down african jungle driving in truly unchartered land (Not Hollywood's version). If its not a Hummer I think solid axles are a must for "the worlds toughest drive".
I love my 3rd Gen but its by no means the toughest vehicle out there.
Sounds like an interesting show, even if they are idiots.

The guys who did the modifications are pretty much the authority when building trucks for snow/arctic conditions. The fact that the Top Gear guy just drove like a jackass is not the fault of the truck builders.

There is a lot of information about arctic trucks, mainly in Iceland, and they generally don't upgrade the axles as they are not spinning their tires on rocks, but trying to keep floating in bottomless snow.

here's an example of an 80 series land cruiser being modified: Arctic 42" HDJ80 Build thread as promised..

OMG! I got so mad when I was watching this! They just put some spacers and 39's and did not beef up anything! I think we have 10x more capable Toyotas on here, not even a extra tranny cooler! Lets get a trip going to the south poll!
