would stock tall 99 front/906 rear work?

I'm running 99 coils up front with 906's in the rear. It has a slight rake but I prefer it that way...

My 99 coils were used but are still holding up fine. I think the rears are more prone to sagging over time. I gained approximately 1" from my old tired 97 coils in the front.

Absolutely. Also the big problem with the rears was the sag with weight. Unloaded, my original rears were only slightly lower than new. Throw in a toolbox, and you hit the bumpstops.

The fronts are much heavier and deal with a constant weight.
 
The 906's are awesome for extra weight in the back. When I tow my 2000ish lb boat, you cannot even notice a difference in the back. And that is with a small sub and ton of tools I always keep in the back.
 
Mine settled, the rear that is, after about a year. Now they are even. Been running this set up since 2009. No regrets.

As Mike alluded to, if one tows on a regular basis, the 906s are the way to go.

The only drawback IMHO is that the rear can be a little rough riding at times.

I'm trying to decide between 5100s and 4600 if they are similar price... do you wish you had a softer shock (as the 5100 is supposed to be a bit softer)
 
I'm running 99 talls up front and 906's in the rear with 5100s all around. I don't know how to describe the ride to you, but i really like it. The rear can be stiff at times when unloaded, but it's not horrible. I'm used to running pretty stiff spring rates on cars though so the 4runner is really soft, which is a nice change. I am running the fronts on the second spring perch which raises things up a bit, but I still think the rear is a little higher. I would definitely recommend my setup to anyone who carries weight in the back frequently.
 
I just installed this setup with bilstein 4600 in the front and 5100 in the back

Has anyone experienced sway side-to-side after installing? Originally I thought it was my coils/shocks being worn out, but with all new parts I have quite a bit of sway over bumps.

Sway bar bushings and links are new last year
 
Another vote of confidence for the 99/906s --- highly recommend. The Moog 99's for the front work great.

I'm running 890's in back with KYB monomax shocks/front sway bar links in the rear, and '99 talls with 1" daystar spacers on front with KYB monomax's as well and its not a rough ride at all. Also replace LBJ's just for peace of mind since doing all the other suspension components. Gave me about 2" over stock height and I figure if the rear settles I can always remove the spacers up front.
Had I not the rake would have been to aggressive. Also with towing they barely sag at all! Which is whats mainly behind all of it. Hope this helps!

5100s and 4600s are supposedly valved the same and offer a similar ride. Only difference is that the 5100s are adjustable for lift - 4600s are not.

Source: I upgraded from 4600s to 5100s and found that to be the case. Also, all the reading on the internets says the same thing. There's a big difference between OEM 4600s and aftermarket 4600s. OEMs can choose whatever valving they want in their 4600s. It's confusing.

Just a few notes / thoughts on this topic. Many people have already covered bits and pieces.

I upgraded my stock 99 highlander (tall) front / rears with Bilstein 4600s all around to:

Front: Bilstein 6112 (kit includes springs), adjusted for near max ride height
Rear: Bilstein 5100s with OME 906s

I'll eventually get together a coherent thread noting the challenges installing the 6112s, but figured I'd answer a few questions bouncing around this thread:

Uncompressed OME 906s are actually shorter than 99 rear springs by about half an inch. Spring rate is much higher on the 906s and are designed to carry heavier payloads. I loaded my 4runner with about 1000 lbs of crap from Lowes with the 906s in and I couldn't even tell my 4runner was loaded with anything. Loaded, ride was smooth and controlled. Unloaded, definitely have a truckish harsh feeling. Unloaded ride height with the 906s is about 1.5 inches taller than my 99 tall springs prior to settling - so probably about 2.5" over base 4runner stock height.



My strong recommendation is to only go with 906s if you are routinely carrying over 400lbs of payload, or are hitting up trails often. Go with other options if you're looking for lift but want a smoother overall ride. 906s are definitely a bit harsh.
 
I’m having a noticeable side to side sway when going over bumps with this setup...

Does anyone have any experience with this problem as well? I read countless threads of people being happy with the 99Tall/OME906 paired with bilstein 4600/5100

See, I completely disagree with members finding the 906's harsh. I noticed no significant change in ride quality moving from my 99 talls to the 906's - felt identical.

Being able to hit the trails with all your camping gear and not riding around on the bump stops is a huge plus!

I'll co-sign this. I do keep about 150 ilbs of tools and supplies in the back. If anything, the 18-year old talls were worse over bumps.

I noticed a significant difference with 906s - although my 99 talls and 4600s were a bit beat.

Unless you are running air bags to assist with load, it's an engineering challenge having an unladen softly sprung vehicle capable of handling significant payload. I was also able to slightly compress my 99 talls with my hands while the 906s were as stiff as concrete.

99 talls have 7 coils compared to 906s which have 9. Spring thickness / diameter of the 906s was a bit larger than the 99 talls.

Logically, 906s should be harsher than 99 talls unless you went to a waaaay softer shock.
