You are correct. Since the 4runner has an enclosed back it is not subject to the "chicken tax". That is why Tacoma's and Tundra's are made here.

Just spreading uninformed info, a staple of forums everywhere. The chicken tax does not apply to SUVs. Ford actually puts temporary back seats in its imported Transit Connect work vans to get around it. The old Subaru Brat did the same thing.
Trump (and I did not vote for him) is threatening a tax on everything in order to try and get other countries to drop their protectionist bans/taxes on US imports. Japan is nearly closed to US imports, a leftover from rebuilding its postwar economy. We are decades past that and it is time for free trade both ways. That is all Trump is posturing for. If the tax somehow sticks, Toyota will just build them (or maybe a Tacoma Surf) here. Its a win for Trump either way.
I tend to believe you, but the unadulterated authority of his and the other guys post leads me to believe that they know something we don’t. I guess we will have to wait for them to set us straight.

I’ll be happy to update my post after I’ve heard back from Toyota USA, whom I queried earlier today. I got my info from The Washington Post, which probably doesn’t care one way or the other about 4Runner import tariffs. I tried researching on the US Govt website, but it was too arcane for common folk. Facts are facts, so we’ll see what transpires.
I think we found the problem. Try this, it is commonly called the chicken tax. It is also a relic from decades ago, and I hope it also goes away so I can get a sweet compact diesel pickup.
btw I was just watching the news and the deal today is for zero tariffs on everything except automotive goods, and is only with the EU. But it is proof that Trump's plan is working so give it some time. The EU just separately signed an agreement with Japan, so Europeans will finally get to experience reliable cars.

Speculation on something that will probably never happen reads like an excuse to bash the president. I read car forums to avoid that divisiveness.
Back on topic, 4runners are one of the few Toyota’s still made in Japan. There is a reason for that and I wouldn’t be surprised if production moves in the near future regardless of tariff negotiations.

The Tacomas are actually made in Mexico (Baja California) - only the TRD Pro Tacomas are made in the USA (San Antonio)

With that logic the Lexus ES350, Camry, Avalon etc are all trash because they are made in the US.

Fortunately, the 6th gen 4Runner is a Fortuner/RAV4 hybrid being manufactured in El Paso. It will cost $30,000 and have the Tacoma V6, but the tires won't rub.
