As far as I know, no. This mod is purely to be able to put your car into 2low. Due to ADD your CV's are always spinning as well as your front driveshaft. A lunchbox locker will always be able to be "felt" unless you have manual hubs.

true but wat i meant to ask is if the add is off then that mean just only one side of the cv axle is spinning there for if you have a locker in front you still can use this mod to help turn while in 4wd? idk:wtf:

ive seen the thread of this mod im talking about but cant seem to find it

i have 2wd low in my 02, i did the bagel mod i think it was to disable the VSC. It wont allow you ti engage the front while activated but you can put in in low now prob!

Ok. Here's the deal:

With ADD, the driver side axle is always spinning, as well as the front shaft.

There is a sleeve on the passenger side shaft that is engaged by a actuator that engages the pares get shaft.

When you put the rig into 4wd, that actuator automatically engages.

Doing this mod, you trick the ADD into thinking the truck is still in 2WD, but you gain the low gearing.

It has nothing to do with lockers. Lockers just make the wheels spin at the same time, regardless of traction.

Another way to make the 2lo mod is to do a manual hub conversion. Then you'll have 2 lo whenever you wanted it.

Check out my mod thread. I've got it all up on there, along with some other mods that I've done.

Easiest way to find it is to google "Doc's mod thread-Toyota 4Runner forum".

Works perfectly on my 2000.
I've wanted 2Lo for ever.
This is awesome!

Has anyone tried to switch in and out of 2wd/4wd Lo (by flipping the switch) while moving?

While moving?

You can try that, but I wouldn't.

Think about it, The gears are all spinning, and if you switched from Hi to Lo, the gears wouldn't match up, and would probably get shredded to hell and back.

Like I said, you can try it, but you should have either a nother transfer case or more gears on stand by....

I'm thinking that it would be an ADD issue. I'm talking about just flipping the switch (which would activate the ADD) while moving in Lo. Not shifting the transfer case. I don't see any issues with shifting the transfer with the 4wd switched off.

It looks like everyone who has done this mod has a manual. Am I missing something? Will this work on an auto trans? Vehicle electronics aren't my strong suit. This is a lot cheaper and easier than dual sticks!

I don't see any reason this wont work with an auto trans.

In theory, with dual sticks, you should be able to shift in and out of the front axle driving. This would assume that the ADD is locked.

This mod unlocks or locks the ADD. I'm still not sure if (with the transfer case shifted into 4Lo) that we can switch the ADD open and closed while moving. I don't see any issues with opening the ADD (switching from 4Lo to 2Lo via the switch). Switching from 2Lo into 4Lo (via the switch) may cause some grinding of the ADD sleeve (not good).

I did shift in and out of 2H - 4H while moving. Also from 4L to 4H to 2H with the ADD turned off. (One great feature of a manual transmission, you can shift from 4L into 4H and into 2H while moving)

do NOT flip the switch on while in 2wd and moving. im scared i might bump mine one day so im putting in a safety cover toggle switch

It would be pretty hard to bump mine.
Toggle switch is the blue one.

On a side note, who loves my gigantic hand made Walnut shift knob?

Thanks Gerdo! I know while not the same as dual sticks I would really like the option of 2Lo. One of these days if I put a locker in the front I would definitely do dual sticks to be able to go back and forth while wheeling.

Ok so here's what I did. I'll just say that this is what worked for me on my 99 sr5 v6 5spd manual tcase.

I removed the glove box (2 phillips screws underneath) and the top plastic cover above the now empty glove box area (3 10mm bolts). Cut the white wire with black tracer (4wd transfer detection signal wire) and run the switch in series with that wire. Leave some slack on either side of the wire to be able to strip the wire for connections as well as put it back together if desired in the future. I just used wire I had lying around because its just a signal, and not load carrying. Check the pictures as to what I did. (note that the only reason there are two crimp connectors on each wire is because I had to lengthen the wires. I used to have the switch hidden in the glove box but that got annoying so I mounted it in the hole where my alarm light was.) When the truck is in 4lo the 4wd cluster light will be on, and when it is in 2lo it will turn off. Essentially all you are doing is tricking the tcase 4wd signal. Hope it helps!

so is it just an on-off switch? to open and close that connection?

ive been thinking about this one a lot.

has anyone confirmed if you can actuate the front diff w the ADD standalone switch while the transfer case is in 2wd on the 5speed? (which would be the same as 4HI im assuming)

other than that, how does everyone like it so far, for those who have done the mod.

If I'm reading you right, Yes.
I have 2Hi like factory. (switch on)
2Hi, lever moved to 4Hi (switch off)
4Hi, lever moved to 4Hi (switch on)
Neutral like factory
2Lo, lever moved to 4Lo (switch off)
4Lo, lever moved to 4Lo (switch on)

I can shift in and out of 4Hi and 4Lo just like factory (switch on or off).
I put the switch into the position that I want while in factory 2Hi, even when moving. Then I shift into the 4Hi or 4 Lo position as original. I also can shift in and out while moving as per factory. I have switched out of 4wd while moving (with the switch). I have NOT switched into 4wd while moving (with the switch).

Yes mine is a 5 speed manual trans. PS, I can still shift out of Lo while moving.

I need to put my rig on jack stands, lock the rear locker (so when I spin a rear wheel by hand, the driveshaft spins), spin the rear wheel by hand, have someone flip the switch (with the lever in 4wd). This way I can control the wheel speed and if there is any grinding or anything bad, I can stop immediately. If it doesn't make any noise, then I'll try while driving. The only possible issue might be with the ADD. The transfer case should have no issues. Honestly I don't think that there will be any issues since the ADD does (factory) engage while moving.

Last thought. When you shift into 4wd (Hi or Lo), the transfer case is now powering the front driveshaft. The switch just doesn't tell the ADD to engage, thus 2wd.
