Write-up: How to Disable (Bypass) the TPMS

Looking at the pictures, I noticed the wire harness for this module is wrapped yellow. I thought yellow wrapping around a wire harness was supposed to alert you to the fact that it contained airbag wiring and not to mess with it. Anyone know if there is any airbag functionality in this module?

I stand corrected. The module is clearly labeled as tire pressure warning system. Completed my bypass today!

Great write up! Used the red scotch-lock and clamped down using a set of pliers. Light no longer illuminates with key-on.

Jumper wire vs. splice connector

Just got new tires at Costco. Didn't want to pay for new TPMS sensors, so they took them out and replaced with standard stems.

I'm ready to do this. My light is not blinking, but solid. It's not THAT annoying (I'm sure a blinking light is AWFUL), but going to do this anyway.

After reading the entire 18 pages of this thread, I have seen a few people ask, but no solid answer has been given:

Is there a pro/con to doing the jumper wire method (disconnect plug, insert jumper wire, tape up, leave unplugged) vs. original poster's splice connector mod (using the blue or red splice connector and plugging it back in)? I like the idea of using a jumper wire and not cutting open a bundle of OEM wires, but is there ANY drawback of leaving the connector unplugged from the TPMS unit?

I just replaced 2004 SPORT WHEELS with 2018 SR5 wheels. The new wheels and tires came with factory TPMS. NO lights after the switch. I can only assume that the earlier 4th generations are compatible with the new sensors.

ditto... i need to do this or something for my 07

I think the original splice method was used in case you ever want to go back and enable the TPMS. I had the blinking light but just disabled it as a whole. Got new tires at Discount Tire a few months ago and just had them completely remove the TPMS. I think we're all pretty knowledgeable to check our tires every now and then to see if they're low instead of having that annoying light.

Just did this and bye-bye stupid tpms system, and its incessant failings on this and numerous other platforms!!

Another great thread. Got rid of that damn light after three years. Only difference in the instructions for my 05 v6 sr5 was that my wires were pink with a grey stripe and white with a black stripe. Dave

Exactly what I was looking for. I'll be doing mine tomorrow. Thank you!

Adding in my thoughts here as I did this mod on 2 4runners this weekend. My TPMS light was not blinking but it was constantly on because I got new wheels/tires without TPMS sensors. This mod worked perfectly for me.

Here are a couple tips for anyone else looking to do this:
I did not disconnect my battery
I used the smaller red scotchlok connector
There are actually 2 pink wires, one is pink/blue and the other is pink/black, make sure you look carefully for the pink/black one
The hardest part is removing the tape covering the wires

Agreed. Just tried it 5 mins ago with a blinking TPMS dash light. My ‘05 SR5 V6 2WD also had the two pink wires you mentioned (blue stipe and black stipe). I used a blue connection on the white with black stripe and pink with black stripe. This didn’t turn off the light. I’m going to try the same two wires but use a smaller red connector. I’ll let y’all know how it goes. Need to go get the connector though. =)

Like others have mentioned in this thread, if you cant get a red scotchlok and you really want to you can just strip the 2 wires and use a smaller section of wire to bridge them, or just cut both of them and twist them together and tape it up. The scotchlok connector is just an easier/quicker way to accomplish the same thing.

Yeah. I can’t find the red ones locally. Probably just going to cut both and directly connect them to each other. It’s not “as” reversible but hey, I hate that dang TPMS anyway. Don’t think I’m ever going to miss it and want it back! LOL Huge thank you to everyone who commented on this and helped me out!

The easiest thing, foolproof, unplug the connector, put a jumper wire in the connector.
Done. Maybe add a bit of electrical tape.
