If you have a higher budget the truck posted in Arlington is awesome and drives great. Owner is great person and very knowledgeable.

Gotcha. And my search and budget would be a lot easier if I could bring myself to sell the zhp but it's got a lot of sentimental value that is tough to let go.

So after a few weeks of searching I realized I need to be realistic in what I WANT out of this search. I have literally all the time in the world to search for the proverbial deal, but i'll never find the right truck if I'm not honest with myself and with what I'm looking for out of one. I could have bought that one in Arlington which was clean as a whistle, but what good is that if it is just going to sit around and be used as a toy when I want to go off-road.

I really am looking for a truck a couple notches above a beater. And the price needs to reflect that. I can't be blowing $8k+ on a 2nd vehicle I just want as a redemption 4runner for my sin of selling the other one.

That said, the specs need to shift accordingly:

• $4k max. not including travel costs if needed.
• Manual is still preferred and at the top of the list
• Years are expanded: 1997-2002
• Autos are on the table
• Miles are the same, under 200kish, but with history and major items accounted for I really could care less about looks/miles as long as no significant rust damage on the frame and, of course, no pink milkshake.
• Locker for both but that will really be a crapshoot at this point and not something I'm really hardcore searching for

Also, build wise, OEM+ is it for me. Not interested in anything lifted beyond the basics at this time. Maybe down the line, but budget as of now is clearly reflecting the "mods don't add value" mantra of used car buying.

hey. can't help you in your search but thought I would chime in, since I just went through literally the same process...

don't settle for the automatic. I bought a '99 Limited, full multimatic/elocker/all that junk a year ago because I was sick of looking for a stick, and I couldn't stand driving it. functionality-wise, it was really fine. the auto transmission works fine. BUT... the brain in that transmission is awful. it hated to downshift - you'll hit the gas, expect it to do something, hit it harder, nothing will happen, finally floor the damn thing, and by the time it downshifts it'll be revving way too high... it's just hateful. as long as you are ok going exactly as fast as it wants to go, it's totally fine, but when you want to pick up the pace a little bit, it's beyond sluggish.

I found a 5 speed '98 a month ago, with way more miles on the clock than I was hoping, but it was priced OK, so i snapped it up. The cloth/non-power seat is an inch or so lower so my head isn't banging the roof any more, and honestly the things people say about the '99+ being more desirable aren't really a big deal (imo). no cupholders is the biggest irritation. and lo, I can shift when I want to and actually hit the powerband, not when the damn thing feels like it. i mean - the 3.4 is a great motor. it utterly sucks when you can't use it the way you'd like.

Damn. Thanks for chiming in man, needed somebody to tell me that. And I figured as much...I actually have never driven an auto third gen. I had the manual and that was the first 4runner I'd driven and then have been looking at only manuals so I do not have a basis for it other than threads on here. The manual is DEFINITELY preferred so it's just a matter of time and being ready to move on a local one. Thanks for the words of encouragement(?). :decision:

I saw the desirability of my truck from your ad, a 99, manual, e-locker rig with COMPLETE "restoration" if you will. I listed mine locally today after fixing a small issue, in quest of my next project/daily I want to try, a Lexus IS300.

I certainly wouldn't take 4k for mine, shit I've spent more then that in parts, but it is the best candidate you are likely going to find if anyone wants to either pay adequately or trade across for my truck.

I did drive 3 automatics before I drove my manual. I'd keep looking for a manual. My truck is best suited for someone who is going to daily drive it, to appreciate what has been done and realize the cash it will save them down the line. There's an ass for every seat. Mine might be too valuable to me to sell it, versus trade it.

Haha agreed, going uphill, weighted down with camping gear? Just drop it into 4th & power right up that hill! 5 Speed's are the shit!
